Handicapping U.S. men’s basketball team’s chance to win Olympic gold

Mike Krzyzewski is familiar with greatness, and with great teams. He has coached four national championship teams at Duke, and he guided the U.S. national team to the gold medal in the 2008 Beijing Olympics. Krzyzewski recently said none of those championship teams, though, is as gifted as the one he leads into the London Olympics.

Pols more interested in reelection than jobs

Almost a month ago, President Obama laid out his plan to create jobs and invest in our infrastructure. The bottom line: more people working and better roads, bridges, and schools. As the President asked last week in his speech at the Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, since when are Republicans against building roads? And I'd add, since when are they against creating jobs? The answer apparently is: They are not against these things at all. Sadly, it is the President's own party which appears to oppose the creation of jobs and the building of roads and schools.

WR Marshall OK after wife stabbed him in altercation

Miami Dolphins wide receiver Brandon Marshall spent part of Saturday in the intensive care unit of Broward General Medical Center after his wife on Friday night stabbed him in the abdomen with a kitchen knife at the couple's home in Southwest Ranches.

Michi Nogami-Marshall, 26, told authorities from the Broward County Sheriff's Office that she stabbed her husband "out of self-defense," according to a sheriff's office arrest report. Police charged her with aggravated battery with a deadly weapon.

Marshall, meanwhile, was taken to the hospital, where he was released Saturday afternoon. A source close to the situation told the Sun Sentinel that Marshall, 27, is "physically fine," downplaying the significance of his wounds. The stabbing didn't injure any of Marshall's vital organs, the source said.

Florida State makes it look easy in routing Brigham Young

PROVO -- Christian Ponder, the Florida State quarterback, walked to the locker room through a maze of Seminoles fans who shouted the FSU war chant and did the tomahawk chop. Bobby Bowden did a TV interview and talked about how much his team's 54-28 victory at BYU might mean to his program. Candi Fisher, wife of FSU offensive coordinator Jimbo, stood outside the FSU locker room and said she felt good now, after this.

Don't believe the hype: Here are college football's most overrated and underrated teams

The beauty of preseason college football polls, if there's any beauty at all, is that it won't take long for them to exposed for what they are: educated guesses based largely on preseason hype, and things like returning players and new coaching acquisitions.
People put stock in preseason rankings, probably more than is deserved. There are always teams ranked much too high, others ranked far too low. There are teams ranked in the top 10 that will finish outside the top 25 -- hello 2008 Clemson. And teams ranked outside the top 25 that could finish in the top 10 -- hello 2008 TCU.

Bobby Bowden and experts differ on generation gap in sports and coaching

The Orlando SentinelORLANDO, Fla. -- Bobby Bowden has been coaching football for more than a half century, the past 33 years at Florida State, and he said recently that he's often asked one question in particular more than most: How have the athletes changed from generation to generation? And his answer, he said, is usually the same: They haven't, really."These kids come into my office, players, whether it's 55 years ago or last week, (a) player walks into my office, I look at him . . . (it's the) same sweet kid," Bowden said recently during one of his spring booster tour stops. "Same sweet, innocent boy. You know it? Only his hair his longer. Or he's got earrings . . . and he wears his underwear outside instead of inside.
