POSSUM KINGDOM LAKE, Texas -- Officials were hopeful Thursday that beleaguered North Texas firefighters could gain the upper hand on a wind-whipped blaze that destroyed more than three dozen cliff-top homes in the latest outbreak of a seemingly endless wildfire season.
The blaze was threatening as many as 160 homes in the Possum Kingdom Lake area and had scorched about 6,200 acres, fueled by high winds, parched vegetation and unrelenting heat gripping the drought-stricken state. But after the fire moved to flatter ground Wednesday, it was expected to burn through the remaining trees and shrubs its path and become easier to contain, Texas Forest Service spokesman John Nichols said.
