Olympian auctions off space on his shoulder

How much is a spot on an Olympian's shoulder worth?

Nick Symmonds put his skin on the eBay auction site, offering to wear a temporary tattoo with the name of the highest bidder as he competes for a spot on the U.S. team for the London Games this summer.

Pac-12's have-nots to become haves with TV deal

While Friday's Pac-12 championship game is one of the outgrowths of league expansion, the conference's dramatic makeover will really take shape next season.

That's when the Pac-12's $3 billion television deal takes off. Because of equal revenue sharing, each of the league's schools will eventually reap more than $20 million apiece annually from the 12-year contract with Fox and ESPN.

The influx means that the conference's athletic departments that depend on financial help from their universities should someday soon be able to pay their own bills.

But for programs with smaller budgets, like Oregon State, Washington State and Utah, it also means a more level playing field with schools like Oregon, which has a generous booster in Nike co-founder Phil Knight, and USC, which has a self-sufficient athletic department and lots of national TV exposure.

Jacobsen revives popular Portland golf event

PORTLAND, Ore. -- For 17 years, pro golfer Peter Jacobsen hosted a popular tournament in his home state. The chummy event was nicknamed Peter's Party.

But the party ended in 2002 when it lost sponsorship, and Jacobsen turned to luring the Tradition, a major on the Champions Tour, to Oregon. That annual senior circuit tournament played for several years at a club west of Portland and later in central Oregon.

U.S. Olympian Sykora recovering from brain injury

Stacy Sykora doesn't remember the rainy April evening when the bus carrying her Volei Futuro volleyball team overturned just yards from the gym where the women were to play.

Brazilian news reports from the accident scene just outside Sao Paulo said the three-time U.S. Olympian did not appear seriously injured. Though the tall Texan briefly passed out, she had only a small cut on her face and it looked as if she was being taken to the hospital merely as a precaution.

Ducks mum on recruiting scandal, but for how long?

Oregon has hired a high-profile law firm and stayed mum as questions mount about the Ducks' $25,000 payment to a Texas-based recruiting service.

The NCAA is investigating what appears to be an inflated payment for services provided by so-called street agent Willie Lyles of Complete Scouting Services in Houston. At issue is whether Lyles helped steer a highly recruited player to Oregon.

U.S. team looks to dominate in the decathlon

EUGENE, Ore. -- Decathlete Trey Hardee describes the state of his sport in the United States as "a tsunami of talent."

Hardee, along with veteran Bryan Clay and newcomer Ashton Eaton, are the decathlon's current stars. They've fueled whispers that, if everything goes right, the Olympics in London next summer could see a rare U.S. sweep.

Clay and Eaton will compete at this week's national championships at Hayward Field in Eugene. The top finishers in the event will determine the U.S. team at the world championships in Daegu, South Korea, this August.

New kits, assistants and billboards for Timbers

PORTLAND, Ore. -- New players, new jerseys, new assistant coaches: This has been a busy couple of days for the Portland Timbers as they prepare to join Major League Soccer next season.

What's a world record mean? Eaton rethinks career

Funny how a world record can change one's perspective.

"I think it means track just got a lot more serious for me," laughed Ashton Eaton, marveling that, at least for the time being, his name will be linked to the words "heptathlon world-record holder."

No. 16 Beavers, No. 15 Cougars are unfamiliar foes

Oregon State coach Mike Riley's message to his players has been straight forward: The Beavers can't let the disappointment of the recent past creep into Las Vegas Bowl.
