Washington 'exploits the toil of others'

Editor,

Our government was set up to secure the blessings of liberty. Those blessings become less secure. Lincoln said the essence of slavery is "you toil and work and earn bread, and I'll eat it." Exploiting the toil of others seems to be Washington's guiding star, whether it be to blunt the results of unconscionable government mandated business practice, or to finance the lifestyle and re-election of the aristocracy, or to pay for the edict putting our food supply in automobile fuel tanks, or to redistribute wealth and subsidize the destruction of the family. Regardless of the recipient, it is the taxpayer's bread being eaten.

Forced coverage for contraception violates conscience

Editor,

Mr. Obama's HHS Secretary, Kathleen Sebelius' recent mandate forces employers to violate conscience in order to provide insurance coverage for sterilization, contraception and abortion pills. First Amendment protection of religious freedom now plays second fiddle to the fiats of the social gospel. It is only a matter of time until the edict comes down requiring coverage for abortion, followed by limits on family size. Life and liberty, pillars in the Declaration of Independence, are being demolished by the tyranny of the Obama administration, the insurance mandate being a good case in point.

We should foster work ethic, not entitlement

The entitled are a growing segment of our culture. Government aid subsidizes poor school performance, drug abuse, poverty, dysfunctional families, non-participation in the job market, crime and multi-generational dependency on public assistance. There is good evidence that if the redistribution of wealth were interrupted, rioting would break out in the streets. The evils of the dole may no longer be mentioned in polite society.

Debt crisis has merely been postponed

(UNEDITED) The crisis has not been averted, it has been postponed. The United States is in a $15 trillion debt hole which is getting deeper at the rate of about $1.5 trillion a year. The Government borrows 40 cents of every dollar it spends. Our national debt is about the same size as our GDP, so if we all stopped eating, commuting, paying our mortgages and credit cards, and sent everything we produce to Uncle Sam, it would take us a year to fill in the hole.

Entitlement leads to devastation

(UNEDITED)Beginning with the Great Society, government has subsidized a 600% increase in the percentage of babies born to single mothers. The infamous List came from public assistance rolls. If enrollment in the Hispanic community continues to blossom, can we not expect a similar devastation of the Hispanic family?
