Tebow, Broncos beat Bears 13-10 in overtime

DENVER -- Wild wins are becoming routine for Tim Tebow and the Denver Broncos, who flail away through most of four quarters before coming through in the clutch.

Matt Prater's 51-yard field goal 6 1/2 minutes into overtime gave the Broncos a 13-10 victory over the stunned Chicago Bears on Sunday. Prater's 59-yarder with 3 seconds left in regulation tied the score after Tebow led another rally.

"If you believe," Tebow said, "then unbelievable things can sometimes be possible."

Record-holders suggest 63-yarder will be toppled

DENVER -- Tom Dempsey is surprised his record 63-yard field goal has lasted 41 years without being broken. Jason Elam can't believe nobody's beaten it since he tied the mark way back in 1998, and Sebastian Janikowski is absolutely stunned no one's surpassed it since he joined the exclusive club a month ago.

Orton once again miles ahead of Tebow

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- The Denver Broncos have a quarterback quandary on their hands even if it's not panning out as much of a competition.

It features constant critiques and criticisms and more tweets than touchdowns.

And it boils down to this: Tim Tebow is much more popular, Kyle Orton is much more polished.

Keli McGregor's legacy lives on

DENVER -- It's been a year since Rockies President Keli McGregor, a 6-foot-7 fitness fanatic and former NFL player who was the picture of health, died on a business trip in Utah at age 48, sending shock waves through the club and the Colorado sports and business community.

His legacy lives on in many ways big and small, both in Colorado and in Arizona, where the planning and construction of the Rockies' new spring training complex in Scottsdale consumed much of his final years.

Wednesday marks the one-year anniversary of McGregor's death, and reminders of him are everywhere.

Aztecs get revenge against BYU in championship game

LAS VEGAS -- Brandon Davies' asbsence might not have made much difference. Not as passionate and poised as No. 7 San Diego State played in its third meeting with No. 8 BYU.

Senior Billy White put on an offensive display that was equally as impressive as his defense that helped bedevil national scoring leader Jimmer Fredette in leading the Aztecs past the top-seeded Cougars 72-54 Saturday night for the Mountain West Conference title.

White had 21 points, 12 rebounds and five steals and fellow all-tournament selection Kawhi Leonard pitched in 20 points and eight boards, then jawed with Fredette as the final seconds ticked off the clock.

MWC women's tournament: Plouffe's basket sends Utah past BYU 50-49

LAS VEGAS -- Michelle Plouffe's 15-footer at the buzzer gave fifth-seeded Utah a 50-49 win over top-seeded BYU in the Mountain West Conference semifinals Friday.

Plouffe grabbed Janita Badon's bounced inbounds pass with 1.5 seconds left and sank the shot that completed a comeback from a 46-39 deficit fueled by Iwalani Rodrigues' back-to-back 3-pointers.

With their third victory in four days, the Utes (17-16) advanced to their third straight title game. They lost last year to San Diego State.

Kristen Riley led BYU (23-8) with 15 points. Mindy Bonham added 13.

Cougars edge TCU in MWC second round

LAS VEGAS -- The stat sheet was ugly and the final score certainly won't impress the NCAA tournament selection committee. But to BYU coach Dave Rose, the No. 8 Cougars' 64-58 squeaker over TCU on Thursday was a thing of beauty.

"I was really pleased with how we competed. I thought our team in crucial situations got big rebounds. We made big shots. We made big free throws. We were able to win that first-round game, which is very difficult, to play a team for the third time," Rose declared after the Cougars advanced to the semifinals of the Mountain West Conference tournament.

The Cougars (29-3) will face nemesis New Mexico, which has handed them two of their three losses this season -- and by an average of 13.5 points.

No. 8 BYU withstands upset bid by TCU, 64-58

LAS VEGAS -- Jimmer Fredette scored 24 points and No. 8 BYU overcame a slow start to edge TCU 64-58 in the Mountain West Conference quarterfinals Thursday.

With suspended teammate Brandon Davies watching from the bench in street clothes, the top-seeded Cougars (29-3) had a tougher time than expected against a TCU team that went 1-15 in conference play before snapping a 13-game skid with a win over Wyoming in the play-in game 24 hours earlier.

The Cougars trailed the ninth-seeded Horned Frogs 34-33 at halftime and didn't take the lead for good until the 12:44 mark, when Jackson Emery swished a 3-pointer from the left corner to break a 40-all tie.

BYU regroups without suspended sophomore

The Mountain West Conference has never created this much buzz.

The up-and-coming league is ranked fourth in the RPI behind the Big East, Big Ten and Big 12 and will feature two top-10 teams at its tournament in Las Vegas this week in BYU and San Diego State while showcasing Cougars scoring machine Jimmer Fredette, one of the favorites for national player of the year, and Aztecs super sophomore Kawhi Leonard.

The real rumble, though, is all about one player who won't be on the court for a single minute.

Cross country's Kikkan Randall is ready for worlds

Kikkan Randall of Alaska is America's best cross-country skier, and she's ready and rested for this week's world championships in Norway.

To prepare for the worlds in Oslo, Randall left the World Cup circuit for a month before returning Sunday and winning the cross country sprits in Drammen, Norway.

She held off a strong field that included Norwegian favorites Maiken Caspersen Falla and Marit Bjoergen. This was Randall's second straight win and third of her career, and it put her back in first place in the World Cup standings.

Karl says he's evaluating his health this season

DENVER -- Everybody seems to be talking about where Denver Nuggets star Carmelo Anthony will end up next season.

What about coach George Karl?

Tebow time is here in Denver

ENGLEWOOD, Colo. -- Tim Tebow is no longer a puzzle as a pro.

The rookie quarterback is coming off his most significant action for the Denver Broncos, eight Wildcat snaps last week against the New York Jets, including his first NFL touchdown run.

Nuggets about to tackle Melo Matter

DENVER -- Now that the Denver Nuggets have their management team in place, they're developing a strategy to keep All-Star Carmelo Anthony in powder blue and gold.

At his introductory news conference Tuesday, Masai Ujiri, the team's new vice president of basketball operations, said he's been in contact with Anthony and will meet with him soon.

Nuggets mull what to do about 'Melo

DENVER -- Just how much longer will Carmelo Anthony play for the Denver Nuggets?

He can opt out of his contract after the upcoming season and become the headliner of the 2011 free agent class or he could play out the final two years of his contract and put off the wine-and-dine tour for a year.
