Ask Babe: Valuing signed Bowman insert cards

Dear Babe: I have the 11-print set of Craig Pursley drawings that were used for 1990 Bowman inserts. I saw your column on them. When you're talking about objects that are signed, are you referring to the artist or the player?

At any rate, I was at a card show in White Plains, N.Y., and not one of the five vendors I showed the cards to had a clue of what they were. Thanks for shining a flashlight on the subject. -- M.D., Milford, Conn.

Ask Babe: How valuable is a baseball signed by Dusty Baker?

Dear Babe: I have a baseball signed by Dusty Baker in 1993 or 1994. -- Theresa Sarti, Redding, Calif.

Baker hit .278 in a 19-year career in the majors before becoming a manager. He is managing in Cincinnati these days, but back then he was the Giants skipper. Of course, the high point of his tenure in San Francisco was when he rode the steroid-laden shoulders of Barry Bonds to within a few outs of winning a World Series title in 2002. A nice, bold sig on the "sweet spot" of an official major league ball is worth around $50-$75.

Ask Babe: Add Maddux to list of 1993 playing-card signees

Dear Babe: There is a lot of discussion on some hobby boards about an autographed insert in the 1993 Bicycle Aces playing cards. A friend has an original display that states that one deck in the display has an autographed card of Greg Maddux, Terry Pendleton, Cal Ripken Jr. or Fred McGriff. Of course, this begs the question of whether each player has an autographed card or if there is one from among the four players. In particular, I am wondering how many of the Ripken autographs there were. Allegedly a signed Ripken sold for several thousand. -- Chris Dishmam, Nashville, Tenn.

The big news here is that it looks as if Maddux can be added to the list of those who signed cards. Previously, we've said that Cal Ripken Jr., Terry Pendleton and Fred McGriff signed cards for this release. Beckett's Almanac of Baseball Cards notes that there is little info on these cards, with no numbers on how many each player signed. If the display shows Maddux, then he probably signed some cards as well. Beckett will probably be happy to add that to the Almanac.

Dear Babe: My dad did business with a Russian firm in the late 1970s. With the 1980 Moscow Olympics approaching he was given a replica gold medal and a Mishka lapel pin. -- C.B., Redding, Calif.

The clever Soviets had picked up on capitalism by the time the 1980 Olympics rolled around. While the U.S. boycotted the summer games, there is no shortage of items produced by the Russians.

Dear Babe: I have thousands of cards in mint condition. Most are complete sets (for example, Topps 792 cards box set) that I started collecting when my son was born in 1986. I continued to buy cards (primarily baseball and hockey) until early 2000. Is there a simple way of determining whether there are any really valuable cards? -- Dave Munson, Corona, Calif.

Dear Babe: My father and grandfather collected baseball cards from a lot of different times. Both have passed away, leaving us with this massive collection. Do you have any suggestions or advise you could share? -- Cynthia S., Riverside

Ask Babe: More questions for the Babe

Dear Babe: I have photo of Babe Ruth with three other men that I found in my late uncle's belongings and was wondering if you might be able to help me figure out who the other gentlemen are, what year it was taken and what kind of hats are they wearing. Were they from a branch of service or some sort of service club? -- Ann Anzo, Mt. Shasta, Calif.

Actually, it's a photo of William Bendix. It was probably taken during the filming of "The Babe Ruth Story" in 1948. Bendix starred in the role of The Bambino. It's not the best-ever movie -- based in large part on Ruth stories that weren't true. As for the three gentlemen in the photo, "Long Beach" printed on one of the hats says a lot. Again, it's just a guess, but I suspect the three gentlemen belonged to a veterans' organization and were visiting while the crew was on location. Recreation Field in Long Beach, which is now the site of Blair Field, could have been where the photo was taken. Unless one of the vets is a Medal of Honor winner or went on to become a famous politician, the photo has little value. Mike Heffner, president of www.Lelands.com, said it might be worth around $25.

Dear Babe: I've been researching value of a 1987 Heisman Award program (perfect condition) signed by Paul Hornung and that year's winner, Tim Brown. I can't find any item they have signed that is equivalent. I know they are authentic. It belonged to my father-in -law. The ticket (also in perfect condition) is stapled with one staple to the front of the first page, so when you open the cover it is facing you. The Hornung signature is on top of that same page above where he put the ticket. The Brown signature is on his page in the centerfold .-- Roberta VanDerzee, Lake Luzerne, N.Y.

Dear Babe: I have a 1992-1993 Fleer Shaquille O'Neal Rookie basketball card and it has no number. It says "Slam Dunkon the front. -- Diane Lynn, Riverside, Calif.

O'Neal's 1992-'93 Fleer Slam Dunk (SD) card comes in three flavors. Beckett's annual basketball card price guide lists a regular issue rookie card (No. 298) along with two unnumbered versions. Beckett lists the regular card at $3. One unnumbered card was part of a team sheet that was sponsored by Gooding's, a supermarket chain that was given out at the final game of the 92-93 season, according to the Almanac. Fifteen thousand sheets were produced. The sheets were perforated, so an individual card will have little nubs on a least two sides, depending on where O'Neal's card was placed on the sheet. That version books at $8. The third and most valuable variation is the unnumbered card that was part of the Tony's Pizza 108-card set. There are 72 regular cards and 36 SD cards. Three-card packs were packaged inside the frozen pizzas. The SD cards are rarer because they replaced coupon cards in the packs. Shaq's Tony's Pizza card, which will have straight edges, lists for $15. For the record, Shaq's rookie card (401) books at $6. He did not have a regular card in the pizza set.

Dear Babe: I have a linen notebook dated 1952 that has signatures in it by Mickey Mantle (twice), Yogi Berra, Billy Martin, Ralph Houk and more. I had it authenticated in 2007. The signatures are in a red booklet that advertises Swan Linen on the cover and the Central Ohio Paper Co. -- Dick Kahler, Colton

It looks like you do indeed have a booklet with autographs from members of the 1952 Yankees team that won it all en route to a record-setting streak of five straight World Series wins from 1949 through 1953. Obviously, the value is limited because the sigs are back-to-back. Mantle is the best of the bunch by a long shot and you have two of them. It looks like the autographed book is worth around $600, said Mike Gutierrez, consignment director for Heritage Auctions (www.ha.com).
