Lawrie joins list of baseball's wildest rants

Helmet tossing and bat banging have become all the rage, it seems. Yet Brett Lawrie and Bryce Harper still have a long way to go before hitting our list of baseball's wildest rants and raves.

Gary Carter dies at 57

NEW YORK -- Gary Carter was nicknamed "Kid" for good reason.

His smile, bubbly personality and eagerness to excel on a ballfield made him a joy to watch at the plate and behind it.

Even his Hall of Fame bronze plaque at Cooperstown shows him with a toothy grin -- the Kid forever.

Pekingese becomes America's top dog at Westminster

NEW YORK -- The crowd at Madison Square Garden grew louder with every tiny step Malachy took, and he sure took a lot of them just to get halfway around the dog show ring.

That was perfect for this Pekingese. Gave him more time to soak in the cheers and look around the stands at his adoring fans Tuesday night.

NEW YORK -- A protest outside the Westminster dog show aimed at Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney drew about a dozen demonstrators Tuesday, plus a few pooches.

Westminister dog show kicks off with early winners

NEW YORK -- Perched on his hind legs, peering over the top rail of his pen, Banana Joe was right in the middle of the backstage circus at the Westminster Kennel Club dog show.

A few feet away, a Havenese and Chinese crested competed for best vocal duo. To his side, another participant -- a human, that is -- kneeled to have her hair coiffed by a groomer. In front, a Norfolk terrier vied for his attention.

Dogs set to take a bow, try to wow at Westminster

NEW YORK -- Sensing something was in the works, the curious lunchtime crowd catty-corner from Madison Square Garden got bigger and bigger. Seventh Avenue was blocked off by the police, perhaps a celebrity sighting was imminent.

Moments later, two NYPD officers began an escort detail across the street. Too far back on the sidewalk to get a clear view, a passer-by guessed a high-profile criminal had been collared.

"Why'd ya do it?" the pedestrian blurted out.

But baseball? Not so much while growing up at the Richard Allen projects in Philadelphia.

Rangers one win from title after late rally

ARLINGTON, Texas -- A long drive by Mike Napoli, a lucky bounce near the mound and suddenly the Texas Rangers were on the brink of their first World Series title.

Napoli delivered the biggest hit of his charmed season, lining a tiebreaking two-run double in the eighth inning that sent the Rangers past the St. Louis Cardinals 4-2 on Monday night for a 3-2 edge.

The slugging catcher then capped off his night of double duty, throwing out a would-be base stealer in the ninth as Albert Pujols struck out.

Rangers deck Cards in Game 4

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Derek Holland kept Albert Pujols in the ballpark and the Texas Rangers in this World Series.

In a title matchup that's getting more interesting with every game, Holland put the emphasis back on pitching. Given a pep talk by manager Ron Washington minutes before the game, Holland allowed two hits over 81âÑ3 innings to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-0 on Sunday night and even things at 2-all.

Holland struck out seven, walked two and never was in trouble against a team that erupted for 16 runs the previous night. He came within two outs of pitching the first complete-game shutout in the World Series since Josh Beckett's gem for Florida to clinch the 2003 title at Yankee Stadium.

Pujols pounds Rangers in Game 3

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Albert Pujols simply let his bat make all the noise. And boy, it was pretty loud.

Pujols hit three impressive home runs to tie the World Series record, amassing five hits and six RBIs Saturday night as the St. Louis Cardinals romped past the Texas Rangers 16-7 for a 2-1 edge.

The outburst by the three-time NL MVP came a day after he was barbed by the media for not sticking around to talk about a Game 2 error and loss. This time, everyone was talking about him.

Spring forecast: Bats, balls, sun and eternal hope

The Super Bowl hit a deep freeze, NBA teams got stranded in blizzards, an NHL game was iced by a snowstorm.

Most everywhere, the winter weather is wicked. Good thing the weekend forecast in Arizona and Florida calls for sunny skies and temperatures in the 70s: King Felix, Joe Mauer and friends are coming.

Giants just one win away from World Series title

ARLINGTON, Texas -- The rookie pitched way beyond his years, sending a shudder through Rangers Ballpark.
