Pinstripe pedigree: Bronx Bowser joins Westminster

NEW YORK — Ladies and gentlemen, now warming up in the Westminster dogpen, the Bronx Bowser.

Meet sweet Mitch, a 5-year-old yellow Labrador retriever. He’s a rookie at America’s top dog show, yet he comes with a pinstripe pedigree — his co-owner is New York Yankees President Randy Levine.

“He’s like Derek Jeter. Very calm,” Levine said.

Damaged by Sandy, dog owners head to Westminster

NEW YORK — Exactly when Lois Cohen-Goldstein can move home, she’s not sure. The black, brackish water from Superstorm Sandy that filled her Long Island house has receded. The problems haven’t.

The repairs are far from finished, the washer and dryer that got pulled off the wall need to be replaced. Her husband is hobbled by a bad disk in his back. Time is running out on how long they can stay at the hotel where they’ve temporarily lived.

All that, and yet they are still determined to bring Keaton the Tibetan terrier to the Westminster dog show.

Treeing Walkers, Russell terriers set for dog show

NEW YORK — Meg and Tank went for a little stroll in the wintry drizzle Monday, taking in the sights of midtown Manhattan.

The hot dog vendor across the street from Madison Square Garden didn’t really interest these out-of-towners. They would’ve felt more in their element at Central Park, where the raccoons live — that’s natural for treeing Walker coonhounds.

Two weeks before the start of the Westminster Kennel Club dog show at the Garden, a pair of treeing Walkers and several Russell terriers were introduced as the newest breeds to enter.

ESPN’s Hannah Storm returns 3 weeks after accident

NEW YORK — ESPN anchor Hannah Storm will return to the air on New Year’s Day, exactly three weeks after she was seriously burned in a propane gas grill accident at her home.

Storm suffered second-degree burns on her chest and hands, and first-degree burns to her face and neck. She lost her eyebrows and eyelashes, and roughly half her hair.

Bonds, Clemens, Sosa on Hall ballot for first time

NEW YORK — The most polarizing Hall of Fame debate since Pete Rose will now be decided by the baseball shrine’s voters: Do Barry Bonds, Roger Clemens and Sammy Sosa belong in Cooperstown despite drug allegations that tainted their huge numbers?

In a monthlong election sure to become a referendum on the Steroids Era, the Hall ballot was released Wednesday, and Bonds, Clemens and Sosa are on it for the first time.

Lawrie joins list of baseball's wildest rants

Helmet tossing and bat banging have become all the rage, it seems. Yet Brett Lawrie and Bryce Harper still have a long way to go before hitting our list of baseball's wildest rants and raves.

Gary Carter dies at 57

NEW YORK -- Gary Carter was nicknamed "Kid" for good reason.

His smile, bubbly personality and eagerness to excel on a ballfield made him a joy to watch at the plate and behind it.

Even his Hall of Fame bronze plaque at Cooperstown shows him with a toothy grin -- the Kid forever.

Pekingese becomes America's top dog at Westminster

NEW YORK -- The crowd at Madison Square Garden grew louder with every tiny step Malachy took, and he sure took a lot of them just to get halfway around the dog show ring.

That was perfect for this Pekingese. Gave him more time to soak in the cheers and look around the stands at his adoring fans Tuesday night.

Romney protest held outside Westminster dog show

NEW YORK -- A protest outside the Westminster dog show aimed at Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney drew about a dozen demonstrators Tuesday, plus a few pooches.

Westminister dog show kicks off with early winners

NEW YORK -- Perched on his hind legs, peering over the top rail of his pen, Banana Joe was right in the middle of the backstage circus at the Westminster Kennel Club dog show.

A few feet away, a Havenese and Chinese crested competed for best vocal duo. To his side, another participant -- a human, that is -- kneeled to have her hair coiffed by a groomer. In front, a Norfolk terrier vied for his attention.

Dogs set to take a bow, try to wow at Westminster

NEW YORK -- Sensing something was in the works, the curious lunchtime crowd catty-corner from Madison Square Garden got bigger and bigger. Seventh Avenue was blocked off by the police, perhaps a celebrity sighting was imminent.

Moments later, two NYPD officers began an escort detail across the street. Too far back on the sidewalk to get a clear view, a passer-by guessed a high-profile criminal had been collared.

"Why'd ya do it?" the pedestrian blurted out.

Cosby recalls baseball youth: 'I wasn't any good'

Bill Cosby played football at Temple, ran track for the Owls and still attends their basketball games.

But baseball? Not so much while growing up at the Richard Allen projects in Philadelphia.

(MATT SLOCUM/The Associated Press) Texas relief pitcher Neftali Feliz and catcher Mike Napoli react after the Cardinals’ Lance Berkman is out at first to end the ninth inning of Game 5 on Monday in Arlington, Texas. The Rangers won 4-2 to take a 3-2 lead in the series.

Rangers one win from title after late rally

ARLINGTON, Texas -- A long drive by Mike Napoli, a lucky bounce near the mound and suddenly the Texas Rangers were on the brink of their first World Series title.

Napoli delivered the biggest hit of his charmed season, lining a tiebreaking two-run double in the eighth inning that sent the Rangers past the St. Louis Cardinals 4-2 on Monday night for a 3-2 edge.

The slugging catcher then capped off his night of double duty, throwing out a would-be base stealer in the ninth as Albert Pujols struck out.

Rangers deck Cards in Game 4

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Derek Holland kept Albert Pujols in the ballpark and the Texas Rangers in this World Series.

In a title matchup that's getting more interesting with every game, Holland put the emphasis back on pitching. Given a pep talk by manager Ron Washington minutes before the game, Holland allowed two hits over 81âÑ3 innings to beat the St. Louis Cardinals 4-0 on Sunday night and even things at 2-all.

Holland struck out seven, walked two and never was in trouble against a team that erupted for 16 runs the previous night. He came within two outs of pitching the first complete-game shutout in the World Series since Josh Beckett's gem for Florida to clinch the 2003 title at Yankee Stadium.

(MATT SLOCUM/The Associated Press) St. Louis’ Albert Pujols celebrates with teammates after hitting a three-run home run during the sixth inning of Game 3.

Pujols pounds Rangers in Game 3

ARLINGTON, Texas -- Albert Pujols simply let his bat make all the noise. And boy, it was pretty loud.

Pujols hit three impressive home runs to tie the World Series record, amassing five hits and six RBIs Saturday night as the St. Louis Cardinals romped past the Texas Rangers 16-7 for a 2-1 edge.

The outburst by the three-time NL MVP came a day after he was barbed by the media for not sticking around to talk about a Game 2 error and loss. This time, everyone was talking about him.
