Sports agent Leigh Steinberg files for bankruptcy

Known as the first super agent, Steinberg said Wednesday that he takes responsibility for debts of several million dollars.

Snowmobiler Levi LaVallee, left, and motorcyclist Robbie Maddison pose for photographers below the landing ramp for an upcoming simultaneous jump, Friday, Dec. 30, 2011, in San Diego. The riders plan to jump across a harbor entrance on the San Diego Bay before midnight on New Year's Eve as part of the "Red Bull: New Year. No Limits" event.

Maddo, LaVallee set for side-by-side jumps

SAN DIEGO -- If all goes right on New Year's Eve, daredevils Robbie Maddison and Levi LaVallee will roar down the takeoff ramps on a motorcycle and snowmobile, respectively, fly over a 300-foot water gap, complete their record-setting jumps and toast their accomplishments.

The side-by-side jumps at Embarcadero Marina Park on San Diego Bay will be the latest in the "Red Bull: New Year. No Limits" series.

Maddison, LaVallee to try side-by-side jumps

SAN DIEGO -- What's better than one daredevil flying through the sky on New Year's Eve?

How about two.

Robbie Maddison and Levi LaVallee will make side-by-side attempts to break world records for the longest motorcycle and snowmobile jumps in the latest edition of the Red Bull: New Year. No Limits. series

The concurrent jumps will be over a 300-foot water gap at Embarcadero Marina Park on San Diego Bay.

LaVallee of Longville, Minn., was scheduled to attempt his snowmobile jump last New Year's Eve in snowless San Diego but was seriously injured in a crash during training two weeks earlier.

Maddison wants to jump 400 feet, which would shatter the current record of 391 feet. LaVallee wants to break his record of 361 feet, set hours before his big wipeout.

Palmer leads Raiders to 24-17 win over Bolts

SAN DIEGO -- Carson Palmer looked like an NFL quarterback again, not like a guy who had settled into semi-retirement in Southern California.

Philip Rivers looked, well, like the turnover-prone quarterback that he's been since opening day.

Palmer threw two touchdown passes and Michael Bush ran 30 times for a season-high 157 yards and one touchdown to lead the Oakland Raiders to a 24-17 win over San Diego on Thursday night, the Chargers' fourth straight loss.

Shaun White Supply Co. set to hit stores, web

SAN DIEGO -- Want to own a skateboard like the one Shaun White used to win his latest X Games gold medal?

The action sports superstar is expanding his empire by launching the Shaun White Supply Co., which will sell skateboards, BMX bikes, helmets and pads, ramps and grind rails in sporting goods stores across the country and online.

Carrier that buried bin Laden may host hoops games

SAN DIEGO -- Organizers say it's all but certain that the Michigan State-North Carolina basketball game on Veterans Day will be played aboard the USS Carl Vinson, the aircraft carrier that carried Osama bin Laden's body to a burial at sea.

The Carl Vinson returned from its deployment Wednesday to Coronado, across the bay from downtown San Diego.

Mike Whalen of the Morale Entertainment Foundation told The Associated Press that 40 to 50 people from his group, ESPN, the Navy and vendors will be at the ship on Monday and Tuesday for a site survey. A briefing for civic leaders and the media is planned for Monday evening at the San Diego Hall of Champions.

Ex-hoops coach Frieder fits in with skateboarders

DEL MAR, Calif. -- He's the white-haired dude in a floppy hat and flip-flops at skateboarding's biggest contest.

Bill Frieder? Skateboarding? Seriously?

That's usually the reaction when people recognize Frieder, the former basketball coach at Michigan and Arizona State. It seems odd, considering that Frieder is 69 and a grandfather, but it makes perfect sense.

Pastrana brings Nitro Circus Live to Vegas

PALA, Calif. -- It's a circus, all right, and don't think for a minute that three rings are anywhere near enough to hold action sports wild man Travis Pastrana and his merry band of daredevils.

After playing to big crowds Down Under, Pastrana will unleash his Nitro Circus Live on North America for the first time in a one-off show Saturday night at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.

Billed as the "greatest live action sports show of all time," Nitro Circus Live will include the standard fare of freestyle motocross, BMX and skateboarding while veering to outrageous stunts such as a guy nicknamed "Wheelz" doing flips in his wheelchair off the 50-foot Nitro Giganta Ramp.

Disabled gamer becomes a pitcher in 'MLB The Show'

SAN DIEGO -- Hans Smith of the St. Louis Cardinals had a mediocre 2010 season. He went 9-11 with a 4.31 ERA, was sidelined for a month with a strained shoulder and was disappointed when the team missed the playoffs.

Don't recognize the name? That's because the left-handed pitcher exists only digitally.

The real Hans Smith has cerebral palsy and is confined to a wheelchair, so the only way he's ever been able to play baseball is on video games. He's such a fanatic that Sony included him as a player in "MLB The Show" for the second straight year.

Maloof unveils plans for South Africa skate park

Sacramento Kings co-owner Joe Maloof is planning a crown jewel of a skate park for the Maloof Money Cup South Africa world skateboarding championships this fall.

The permanent park will be built near a former diamond mine in Kimberley known as the "Big Hole." It will feature a 15,000-square-foot concrete street course shaped like a diamond, a halfpipe billed as the biggest on the continent and a Mini Mega ramp.

Road Show! BYU surges past SDSU 80-67

SAN DIEGO — Whether it’s at altitude or sea level, the San Diego State Aztecs just can’t stop Jimmer Fredette.

The star guard had 25 points and nine assists as No. 7 BYU spoiled the biggest game in No. 6 San Diego State’s history, running away with an 80-67 victory Saturday.

As the final buzzer sounded, a fired-up Fredette threw the ball into the air and celebrated with his teammates just a few feet from SDSU’s student section. It was the first home loss in 14 games this season for the Aztecs, who also lost by 13 to BYU at Provo a month ago.

San Diego State students wait in line on Thursday for tickets that went on sale Friday for the SDSU-BYU game, which is today.

'The Show' gives Aztecs huge home-court edge

SAN DIEGO -- Today's Top 10 showdown between BYU and San Diego State won't begin until "The Show" begins.

Minutes before the noon MST tipoff, on cue from SDSU running back Ronnie Hillman, a few thousand students will begin chanting "I believe that we will win" while jumping up and down in a sort of vertical mosh pit stretching from the front row behind the east baseline to the top row of Viejas Arena. There will be a gecko, a Spider-Man, an elf, a 12-year-old kid dressed as a banana -- his dad's a booster -- and others in wacky costumes.

SAN DIEGO -- Saturday's Top 10 showdown between BYU and San Diego State won't begin until "The Show" begins.

Minutes before the 11 a.m. PST tipoff, on cue from SDSU running back Ronnie Hillman, a few thousand students will begin chanting "I believe that we will win" while jumping up and down in a sort of vertical mosh pit stretching from the front row behind the east baseline to the top row of Viejas Arena. There will be a gecko, a Spider-Man, an elf, a 12-year-old kid dressed as a banana -- his dad's a booster -- and others in wacky costumes.

Jawing at Jimmer not in SDSU's playbook

SAN DIEGO -- This sounds almost too nice to be a rivalry.

Fans shouldn't expect any trash talking on the court when Jimmer Fredette and the No. 7 BYU Cougars visit D.J. Gay and the No. 6 San Diego State Aztecs on Saturday in a nationally televised showdown.

Fisher's done a fab job rejuvenating San Diego State

SAN DIEGO -- If anyone thought Steve Fisher was still living in the shadow of Michigan's Fab Five, they haven't been paying attention to what he's done at San Diego State.

Although it's taken 12 years, Fisher has transformed a backwater program into a top-10 team and San Diego into a basketball town. Montezuma Mesa has become the place to be, as the Aztecs, laden with Californians, play before loud, sellout crowds. Their ultimate goal is to finally win a game in the NCAA tournament.

Sitting in his corner office overlooking Viejas Arena, Fisher contemplates the transformation in both his career and at SDSU, which was 26-1 and ranked No. 6 going into Saturday's game at Air Force.
