HBO places its bets on horse racing drama 'Luck'

LOS ANGELES -- David Milch had the script for a horse racing drama kicking around in his head for 30 years. The screenwriter and producer was just too busy living it to put words to paper.

As a 6-year-old, Milch first accompanied his father to the racetrack in Saratoga Springs, N.Y. He was too young to wager, but Milch's father worked things out anyway.

U.S. Olympians to wear vintage patriotic clothing

IRVINE, Calif. -- Decathlete Bryan Clay spends his days in spandex, while Ryan Lochte pulls on a swimsuit like he's been doing since he was 8 years old. They'll be looking a lot spiffier, along with the rest of the U.S. Olympic team, at next year's London Games.

Clay and Lochte, along with swimmer Rebecca Soni and gymnast Jonathan Horton, are among 12 Olympic and Paralympic athletes sponsored by Ralph Lauren, who has designed the official uniforms for the American team to wear in the opening and closing ceremonies in London.

At a recent photo shoot on the track at UC Irvine, Clay posed in a navy polo shirt that sported the word London on the back.

Upsets rule on Day 2 of Breeders' Cup

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Upsets ruled on the second day of the Breeders' Cup, with Afleet Again pulling off the biggest surprise at 41-1 odds in the Marathon and 18-year-old Irishman Joseph O'Brien winning the Turf for his father-trainer Aidan O'Brien on Saturday.

Later, Uncle Mo was the early favorite for the $5 million Classic, with filly Havre de Grace taking on the boys in the showcase race of the two-day world championships.

Goldikova was poised to go for her record fourth consecutive win in the $2 million Mile. Union Rags was the early 2-1 choice in the Juvenile, with the winner likely becoming the early favorite for the Kentucky Derby.

Uncle Mo made early 5-2 favorite in BC Classic

LOUISVILLE, Ky. -- Uncle Mo was made the early 5-2 favorite Monday in a field of 13 for the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic, where the colt who beat a life-threatening liver disease will try to complete his comeback with a victory.

Uncle Mo and John Velazquez will break from the No. 12 post in Saturday's 1 1-4-mile race at Churchill Downs, where the colt was scratched on the eve of the Kentucky Derby in May because of a mystery ailment that was eventually diagnosed as liver disease.

"It gives Johnny some options going to the first turn," trainer Todd Pletcher said about Uncle Mo's post position. "It's perfect. He's a good horse getting away from the gate."

UCLA picked to win Pac-12 title; Utes 12th

LOS ANGELES -- California coach Mike Montgomery's surprise announcement Friday that he had recent surgery for bladder cancer and is now cancer-free overshadowed Pac-12 media day, when UCLA was picked to win the newly realigned league's title.

Montgomery took the stage at The Conga Room at LA Live across the street from Staples Center and immediately told reporters that he was diagnosed a month ago and had surgery last week.

UCLA picked to win 1st Pac-12 basketball title; Utes tabbed 12th

LOS ANGELES -- UCLA was picked on Friday to win the newly realigned Pac-12's basketball title, something the Bruins haven't done since 2008 when they made the last of three consecutive trips to the Final Four.

The Bruins received 421 points and 14 first-place votes in polling by media who cover the reconfigured conference. They won three consecutive league titles from 2006-08, repeating their run of three in a row from 1995-97.

UCLA narrowly edged California and Arizona in first-place votes. The Golden Bears were picked second with 405 points and 13 first-place votes, while defending league champion Arizona had 404 points and 11 first-place votes for third. All three teams were ranked in the AP Top 25 preseason poll on Friday. The Wildcats are No. 16, the Bruins No. 17 and Cal is No. 24.

Washington, the defending tournament champion, was picked fourth with 355 points, followed by Oregon, Stanford and Southern California. Oregon State was picked eighth and Arizona State ninth. Newcomer Colorado and Washington State tied for 10th.

Havre de Grace to take on boys in BC Classic

Havre de Grace is going where Zenyatta once did, taking on the boys in the $5 million Breeders' Cup Classic. The 4-year-old filly is 5-of-6 this year and a victory could burnish her credentials for Horse of the Year.

A record total of 193 horses, including 29 from overseas, were pre-entered Wednesday for the $26 million, 15-race Breeders' Cup world championships at Churchill Downs in Louisville, Ky., on Nov. 4-5. That tops last year's total of 184.

Grin and bear it: Griffin takes it all off

MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. -- There's no panic in Blake Griffin, whether it's holding out with his fellow NBA players for a better labor deal or posing nearly nude in a national magazine.

Griffin doesn't think the players will flinch even as the league's lockout threatens the start of the season next month. He didn't blink when given his choice of a white, black or leopard thong to don for the photo shoot.

Kershaw's 20th win strengthens Cy Young Award bid

LOS ANGELES -- Clayton Kershaw hears the Cy Young Award talk swirling around him, although he won't indulge it. With his 20th victory and major league-leading 2.27 ERA, the low-key Los Angeles Dodgers ace is letting his numbers do the talking.

Kershaw became the club's first 20-game winner in 21 years with a 2-1 victory over the San Francisco Giants on Tuesday night, making him 5-0 against the rival Giants this season.

NBA's Love exits early in beach volleyball debut

MANHATTAN BEACH, Calif. -- Kevin Love won't be giving up his day job anytime soon. Idled by the NBA lockout, the Minnesota Timberwolves All-Star hit the sand to compete in his first pro beach volleyball tournament Thursday. He and his partner lost in straight sets, but Love called the action "addicting" and wants to keep honing his game.

As the lowest-seeded players in the Manhattan Beach Open, Love and pro partner Hans Stolfus drew the top-seeded team of Sean Scott and John Hyden, who won last week's tournament in Hermosa Beach and are undefeated this summer. Scott and Hyden took it easy on Love and Stolfus, handing them a 21-16, 21-15 defeat under blue skies next to the Manhattan Beach pier.

Franklin creates a summer splash in the pool

If Missy Franklin's mind wanders as she sits in her advanced placement literature class this week in suburban Denver, the 16-year-old swimmer will have plenty of summer memories to entertain her.

Maybe she'll remember winning three gold medals at her first world championships in China. Or setting two American records in the process. Or being presented with a $20,000 check as the top points earner on the grand prix circuit, beating out the likes of Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte.

Missy Franklin's 2 golds lead U.S. at swim worlds

SHANGHAI -- Michael Phelps easily won the 100-meter butterfly, then ceded the spotlight to Missy Franklin, swimming's newest breakout star who made a splash on her final night at the world championships.

Without Milorad Cavic pushing him, Phelps scowled upon seeing his time of 50.71 seconds Saturday night. Too slow for his liking, it was still good enough to earn him a second individual gold medal and his sixth overall with one day remaining in the meet.

Franklin won two more golds to leave the worlds with five medals overall -- three gold, a silver and a bronze. As he watched her, Phelps recalled his first world meet in 2001 as a 15-year-old who set a world record.

Source: Dodgers fire Steve Garvey

LOS ANGELES -- The Los Angeles Dodgers have fired Steve Garvey for his attempts to buy the team that he helped to the 1981 World Series title, according to a person familiar with the situation.

The person, who wasn't authorized to speak publicly on personnel matters and talked to The Associated Press on Friday night on condition of anonymity, said Garvey is no longer with the team, ending a 30-year tenure in the organization. Garvey worked in marketing and community relations, making numerous public appearances on behalf of the team and its sponsors.

Garvey has publicly discussed his formation of a group that has the goal of buying a professional sports franchise, possibly the Dodgers. He said last month former Dodgers pitcher Orel Hershiser had joined forces with him under the banner of the Garvey-Hershiser Group.

'Bold' wins 4 Emmys as TV's soap selection slims

LAS VEGAS -- "The Bold and the Beautiful" won four trophies -- including drama series honors for the third consecutive year -- at the Daytime Emmys, which will have two fewer soap operas to celebrate next year.

The ABC shows "All My Children" and "One Life to Live" are leaving the air after more than 40 years because of declining ratings. Their departures mean just four daytime dramas will remain.

Brittany Allen of "All My Children" earned the show's final Daytime Emmy on Sunday night, for younger actress in a drama series. She is no longer playing the role of Marisa Chandler.

Kim Rhode shooting at Olympic history in London

NEWHALL, Calif. -- Kim Rhode slips two shells into her 12-gauge shotgun, yells "Pull!" and takes dead-aim on the first target, then a second one whizzing through the air. She hits both cleanly, leaving orange clouds of chalk hanging in the cool air.

She reloads and does it repeatedly, with father and coach Richard Rhode pushing the buttons that remotely launch the targets on the skeet field named for the four-time Olympic medalist.
