A 1961 Chevy Apache pickup truck won the General's Trophy for 'best of show' honors when the 309th Maintenance Wing held its annual Car Show and Commander's Call June 30.

The Chianti red pickup, the result of an eight-year restoration project by Duane Blue, also won first place in the truck category.

Rebuilding Camaro comes with a few surprises

For Corey Dalton, working on the 1969 Rally Sport Camaro he's entering in the 309th Maintenance Wing's car show is almost like taking care of a younger sibling.

After all, the car's been in his family for almost 40 years. And he plans to keep it that way.

Dalton, a sheet metal mechanic for the 571st Commodities Maintenance Squadron, was 13 when his family bought the Camaro convertible from a Riverdale dealership in 1973.

309th MXW plans Car Show for June 30

The 309th Maintenance Wing will sponsor its fourth annual Car Show June 30 from 11 a.m.-1 p.m. in Centennial Park.

Car categories are muscle, sports and classic. Specialty vehicles, trucks and motorcycles will also be displayed. First and second place trophies will be awarded to the best entry in each category.

Deadline to enter a vehicle is June 24,

and the fee is $15. Entry forms are available in the 309th MXW Protocol Office, Building 849, Room B-4.

LCAP team to visit and evaluate Hill logistics

Maintenance, logistics and supply chain functions within the Ogden Air Logistics Center will be evaluated June 14-25 as part of the Logistics Compliance Assessment Program.

A 90-member team, from Air Force Materiel Command headquarters at Wright-Patterson AFB, Ohio, is to arrive June 10, and following training, and safety, security and local area briefings, will begin its evaluation efforts on Monday, June 14. An executive out-brief of the results is set for June 25.

A director and a team from the 309th Maintenance Wing will receive 2009 Depot Maintenance Management Awards from Air Force Materiel Command.

Rick Buhl, 309th Electronics Maintenance Group director, has been selected as outstanding depot maintenance manager; and the A-10 Speedline Team from the 309th Aerospace Maintenance and Regeneration Group was named the Outstanding Depot Maintenance Management Team (Production).

Hill squadron specializes in F-22 HUD maintenance

Head-up displays (HUD) for the F-22 Raptor are now being maintained by the 523rd Electronics Maintenance Squadron, Display and Indicator Shop, thanks to a partnering arrangement with Lockheed Martin and BAE Systems England.

The squadron has trained five members to test, calibrate and repair the F-22 HUD using a test program and equipment developed by BAE Systems. The tester simulates symbology the pilot sees, allowing the squadron to check the unit for accuracy.

'Whoa, ho, ho,' it's the pros for Fat Albert Airlines repair

Fat Albert Airlines, the support plane for the Navy's "Blue Angels" Flight Demonstration Squadron and a Navy recruiting enhancement symbol, received a new center wing "rainbow" fitting from the 572nd Aircraft Maintenance Squadron (C-130).

The center wing rainbow is one of the most critical areas on this aircraft's airframe; it attaches the outer wing to the center wing and endures tremendous stresses.

Building 849 renamed for former director

Building 849 renamed for former director

A former director of missiles, electronics, aircraft and distribution at Hill Air Force Base was honored March 19 when Building 849 was renamed Price Hall.

The building, located near the intersection of "F" Avenue and Wardleigh Road, is the headquarters for the 309th Maintenance Wing and contains offices for the Defense Logistics Agency.

309th Maintenance Wing senior master sergeant gets Bronze Star

In recognition of his efforts during Operation Iraqi Freedom, Senior Master Sgt. Gary L. Meacham was presented the Bronze Star medal Feb. 24 by Brig. Gen. John Cooper, 309th Maintenance Wing commander.

Meacham received the award for meritorious achievement as squadron superintendent of the 52nd Expeditionary Flying Training Squadron, 321st Air Expeditionary Advisory Group, 321st Air Expeditionary Wing, Kirkuk Regional Air Base, Iraq, from August 2008 to July 2009.

Hill workers get IDEA awards

Improvements suggested by four employees of the 309th Maintenance Wing have saved the Air Force nearly $600,000 and earned them $30,000 through the Innovative Development through Employee Awareness -- IDEA -- program.

Honored were Slade Knightly, Nathan Dean and Lester Stone, 309th Commodities Maintenance Group; and Brian Wade, 309th Maintenance Support Group. The men received recognition certificates Jan.

'Show them what you can do'

Though he lost most of his eyesight -- and almost his life -- 24 years ago, Dave Olsen is now happily working in the 524th Electronics Maintenance Squadron (Electronics and Instruments), cleaning and repairing aircraft parts.Olsen's abilities have earned him the Hill Air Force Base Outstanding Employee with Disabilities Award for 2009. He will be recognized at the Oct. 22 Persons with Disabilities Awards Luncheon at Club Hill, starting at 11:30 a.m., and receive a plaque from Maj. Gen. Andrew Busch, Ogden Air Logistics Center commander.

Bob Binder and Eric Roberts were members of the 2952nd CLSS when it was activated. They attended the 649th CLSS deactivation.

649th CLSS stands down; mission taken up by 573rd AMXS

With the furling of its unit guidon, the 649th Combat Logistics Support Squadron on Hill Air Force Base was formally inactivated Oct. 1.The squadron, which started as the 2952nd CLSS in 1967, provided aircraft battle damage repair and crash damage repair, and sent depot field teams worldwide to support F-16, A-10 and F-22 aircraft. The mission and the 56 remaining squadron members will become part of the Expeditionary Depot Maintenance Flight under the 573rd Aircraft Maintenance Squadron, 309th Aircraft Maintenance Group.
