MMA Today: Jake Ellenberger's star definitely on the rise

Before his last fight, Jake Ellenberger's resume in the Ultimate Fighting Championship was marked by a split-decision loss to current UFC interim welterweight champion Carlos Condit in his debut and four victories over mid-carders.

Ellenberger made fans take notice, however, in his last fight, a first-round knockout of Jake Shields in September. Shields was highly touted and lost a decision to UFC welterweight champion Georges St. Pierre just four months earlier.

MMA Today: Carlos Condit ready for fight with Nick Diaz

For Carlos Condit, the waiting is finally over.

Condit saw his opportunity to fight for a title in the Ultimate Fighting Championship change several times over the past six months, due primarily to the antics of Nick Diaz and the health of Georges St. Pierre.

The posturing comes to an end, however, on Saturday night when Condit fights Diaz for the interim UFC welterweight championship in the main event of "UFC 143," which will be held at the Mandalay Bay Events Center in Las Vegas and air live on pay-per-view at 10 p.m. EST.

MMA Today: Davis aims to prevent Evans title bout

Phil Davis and Rashad Evans joined four other mixed-martial-artists recently on a conference call promoting Saturday's "UFC on Fox 2" at the United Center in Chicago.

Much of the 30-minute call was devoid of trash talk, save for the occasional good-natured barb between the fighters.

But the niceties quickly dispersed when the conversation turned to what will happen with the fighters' careers after the bout.

MMA Today: Anthony Johnson ready for middleweight debut

For the past few years, Anthony Johnson has endured a tough task in the days leading up to his fights.

Johnson, who made his debut in the Ultimate Fighting Championship in June 2007 with a 13-second knockout of Chad Reiner, typically shed more than 40 pounds to make weight.

MMA Today: Rockhold's strong return fueled by patience

Luke Rockhold learned a valuable lesson about patience the last two years.

After he defeated Paul Bradley in early 2010 for his sixth consecutive victory in Strikeforce, he had surgery to repair a grade-two AC separation in his left shoulder. Then, he reinjured it and needed a second surgery.

MMA Today: Strikeforce will live on in 2012

Over the past few years, the Ultimate Fighting Championship found a unique way to deal with its competitors. Its parent company, Zuffa LLC, bought the competing promotions and absorbed them into UFC.

It happened with Japan's PRIDE organization and the California-based World Extreme Cagefighting in 2007. Their promotions and assets were eventually folded into the UFC.

MMA Today: Rising Gilbert Melendez aims for the UFC

Strikeforce lightweight champion Gilbert Melendez is considered one of the best 155-pound fighters in the world. He is 19-2, and has won five consecutive fights. But one glaring hole remains in his impressive resume -- a run atop the Ultimate Fighting Championship.

Melendez's opportunity opened earlier this year when Zuffa, the parent company of the UFC, purchased Strikeforce. UFC President Dana White spoke about moving Melendez to the higher-profile company, and that likely will happen if Melendez defeats Jorge Masvidal in the main event of Saturday's Strikeforce card in San Diego.

The event will air live (Showtime, 10 p.m. EST, tape-delayed on the West Coast). Melendez, 29, a native of Santa Ana, Calif., acknowledged the recent discussion about his potential entry into the UFC.

MMA Today: Jones aims to extend his year-long win streak

Although his work is not yet done for the year, Ultimate Fighting Championship light heavyweight champion Jon Jones already has turned in one of the most impressive calendar years in the brief history of mixed martial arts.

Jones dispatched a top contender in Ryan Bader in early February via a second-round choke. Just six weeks later, he ran through Mauricio "Shogun" Rua with a third-round TKO to capture his first UFC championship.

A hand injury delayed his next bout until September, when he returned to defeat another former UFC light heavyweight champion, Quinton "Rampage" Jackson, with a submission in the fourth round.

MMA Today: Miller tweets, then talks up Ultimate Fighter finale

The power of social media will be on display Saturday night when Jason "Mayhem" Miller headlines The Ultimate Fighter finale against Michael Bisping.

Miller, 24-7 with a no contest, signed with the Ultimate Fighting Championship earlier this year after an accomplished career in other organizations. When a role as a coach for TUF's 14th season came open, Miller took to Twitter to volunteer his services.

MMA Today: Bellator wraps up successful 5th season

Last weekend, two of the year's most thrilling mixed martial arts battles occurred on the same night.

Many expected the main event of UFC 139, when former Strikeforce and PRIDE champion Dan Henderson eked out a hard-fought decision against former UFC champion Mauricio Rua, to be a memorable fight. But the Bellator Fighting Championship lightweight title bout between Eddie Alvarez and challenger Michael Chandler was an unexpected surprise.

Alvarez, regarded as one of the world's top five lightweights, predicted a victory in the second round. Chandler matched Alvarez punch for punch, however, and secured a submission victory in the fourth round to win the title.

MMA Today: Chandler sees 'opportunity' against Alvarez

Michael Chandler got a quick start to his MMA career.

Chandler, a 25-year-old graduate of Missouri, landed in Strikeforce by his second career fight. Less than a year later, he signed a deal with Bellator Fighting Championships. With another two victories, Chandler was selected for the Bellator lightweight tournament earlier this year, and he defeated Patricky Freire in May to win the tournament, the $100,000 prize and a title shot.

MMA Today: Georges St-Pierre not a happy camper

Georges St-Pierre typically is unflappable.

St-Pierre, the Ultimate Fighting Championship's welterweight champion since December 2007, is the consummate gentleman in public and in interviews. St-Pierre rarely has a cross word for an opponent and avoids the prefight insults of most contemporaries.

MMA Today: Warrior One gives fighters another option

Prior to this year, fighters who had fallen out of favor with the Ultimate Fighting Championship could go to Strikeforce, another national company with a television contract with Showtime.

When the UFC's parent company, Zuffa LLC, purchased its competitor, options for fighters began to dwindle. Several other companies, Bellator Fighting Championships (MTV2) and ProElite (HDNet), have national television contracts.

MMA Today: Bryan Baker's big opponents include leukemia

Most young mixed-martial-arts athletes experience their evolution in the sport in their mid-20s.

Bellator Fighting Championships middleweight Bryan Baker is no different from most in many respects. The 26-year-old's skills are constantly improving, and he is just two fights away from challenging for the middleweight championship.

The difference, however, lies in Baker's recent past. Early last year, Baker was diagnosed with chronic myelogenous leukemia. He fought in Bellator's second season and reached the middleweight-tournament finale, where he lost to Alexander Shlemenko.

MMA Today: 'Rampage' Jackson ready to roar

Quinton "Rampage" Jackson spent the past three years in search of regaining the Ultimate Fighting Championship's light heavyweight title.

Jackson, fired up by what he perceived to be a lack of respect from champion Jon Jones, gets his opportunity to compete for the belt Saturday night against Jones in the main event of UFC 135 in Denver live on pay-per-view at 9 p.m. EST.

"When I first met Jones at the press conference, he was real cocky and he was saying stuff that he shouldn't be saying to a seasoned fighter like me," Jackson said. "The guy has never walked the way I've walked in this sport. Basically, he just said the wrong (expletive). I treat him the way I treat him because I have no respect for him."
