MMA Today: Jake Ellenberger gears up for big night ... Other action

Jake Ellenberger fought his way up the ranks, competing in 24 fights, as he waited for his opportunity to join the Ultimate Fighting Championship roster.

Saturday night, Ellenberger will compete in his highest-profile bout to date when he fights Jake Shields in the main event of UFC's "Fight Night" at the Ernest N. Morial Convention Center in New Orleans. The card can be seen live on Spike TV beginning at 9 p.m. EDT.

"It was all about timing," Ellenberger, 26, said. "I wanted to be ready. I had a few offers before. But when I went there and I was going to fight in the UFC, I was going to be ready to fight for the title. I wanted to be able to compete with the best and be world champ."

MMA Today: Strikeforce grand prix semis are intriguing

While some of the biggest names from the start of the Strikeforce heavyweight grand prix tournament may be out the competition, Saturday's semifinals still deliver a pair of intriguing match ups with Josh Barnett against Sergei Kharitonov and Antonio Silva against Daniel Cormier, an injury replacement for Alistair Overeem.

The event, which will air live from Cincinnati on Showtime at 10:30 p.m. EST, will also feature the middleweight championship fight between Ronaldo Souza and challenger Luke Rockhold.

Cormier, a former Olympic wrestler with an 8-0 record, defeated Jeff Monson in June. Silva, 16-2, offers a different challenge for Cormier by presenting him with a variety of strikes to defend.

MMA Today: Scott Kent shows Muay Thai translates to MMA

Over the past year, Scott Kent faced the same question many times.

How does mixed martial arts differ from Muay Thai, one of its core components? Kent has the answer down to a science.

"What I always tell MMA fans, casual MMA fans, is, 'What do you like best about MMA and what do you like the least?' " Kent said. "I would say 90 percent of the responses are 'The standup fighting is my favorite.' Unless you are a wrestler or a judo practitioner, you probably don't understand that or appreciate that much. We bill this as the most exciting standup fighting style that there is.

MMA Today: UFC 134 hits Brazilian hot bed

Under the management of brothers Frank and Lorenzo Fertitta and Dana White, the Ultimate Fighting Championship kept an ever watchful eye on global expansion.

Since their purchase of the UFC in early 2001, the promotion -- under parent company Zuffa LLC -- held events in England, United Arab Emirates, Canada, Ireland, Australia, Northern Ireland and Germany.

Saturday night, the UFC visits one of the world's hotbeds of mixed martial arts when UFC 134 is held in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. The event, headlined by UFC middleweight champion and Brazilian native Anderson Silva's title defense against Japan's Yushin Okami, will air live on pay-per-view at 9 p.m. EST.

MMA Today: Fox Sports jumps into UFC

Zuffa LLC, the owner of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, announced a seven-year deal with FOX Sports Media Group on Thursday to bring its brand of mixed martial arts to a variety of FOX networks.

The deal will allow FOX to broadcast four live events per year in prime time or late night, with the first slated for November 12 at 7 p.m. MST.

MMA Today: Pettis, Henderson boost UFC lightweights

When the Ultimate Fighting Championship was set to absorb sister company World Extreme Cagefighting last December, the competitive lightweight division experienced an influx of new talent, including WEC champion Anthony Pettis and former champion Ben Henderson.

The integration created several high-profile fights, including UFC veteran Clay Guida against Pettis in May. The pecking order of the division has been held up, however, by a January draw between UFC champion Frankie Edgar and top challenger Gray Maynard and subsequent injuries to both that pushed their rematch from May until October.

The question of who awaits the October winner may be settled this weekend when Jim Miller, who has won his last seven fights, battles Henderson during the undercard of Sunday's UFC Live 5 card in Milwaukee. The event will air live on Versus at 9 p.m. EST.

MMA Today: Henderson, Emelianenko bring MMA act home

For years, Dan Henderson and Fedor Emelianenko represented the best of mixed martial arts in Japan.

Henderson, the current Strikeforce light heavyweight champion, held both the welterweight and middleweight titles in PRIDE and won the welterweight grand prix in 2005. Emelianenko, who went nine-and-a-half years without a loss, held the heavyweight title and won the heavyweight grand prix in 2004.

MMA Today: Curran ready to become a champion

When Pat Curran walked to the cage for his quarterfinal fight against Luis Palomino last month, the 23-year-old's eyes found the banners Bellator Fighting Championships hangs from the rafters in honor of the promotion's champions.

Curran envisions his face among the other title-holders and is within two victories of fighting for the Bellator featherweight title.

MMA Today: St. Preux makes it from gridiron to Strikeforce

With losses in his first two professional fights, not many could predict a successful conversion from football player to mixed martial artist for Ovince St. Preux.

St. Preux's lack of success carried through his first year in the sport, and he lost four of his first seven fights.

MMA Today: UFC young talent pipeline still impressive

While established veterans remain an integral part of the Ultimate Fighting Championship, the continuous emergence of new contenders provides a window into the promotion's future.

Of the seven champions, just two are 30 or older -- welterweight champion Georges St-Pierre (30) and middleweight champion Anderson Silva (36).

MMA Today: Faber has shot at redemption vs. Cruz

For Urijah Faber, Saturday night's main event bout against Ultimate Fighting Championship bantamweight champion Dominick Cruz represents a chance to restore the shine to his once glowing career.

For Cruz, the fight allows him to redeem his lone professional loss and establish himself as the top bantamweight in the world.

MMA Today: Triple-header of cards looms

Fans of mixed martial arts are in the midst of a rare treat this weekend with three shows in as many days.

Strikeforce is set to air a Challengers card Friday night. Bellator Fighting Championships kicks off its summer series, which features a featherweight tournament, Saturday night. And on Sunday night, the Ultimate Fighting Championship presents UFC Live on Versus, which features a fight between two of the promotion's top welterweight contenders.

Rick Story, who has won six consecutive fights since losing his UFC debut two years ago, will face Nate Marquardt in the UFC main event, which will be held in Pittsburgh and airs at 9 p.m. EST. Marquardt, a former top middleweight contender, is making his debut at the lower weight.

MMA Today: Alistair Overeem on Strikeforce heavyweight tilt

The Strikeforce heavyweight world grand prix continues Saturday night four months after the first half of the quarterfinals were contested.

Current Strikeforce and DREAM heavyweight champion Alistair Overeem will fight Fabricio Werdum -- who ended Fedor Emelianenko's 10-year undefeated streak a year ago -- in the main event. The winner will fight Antonio Silva, who defeated Emelianenko in February, in early fall. The other quarterfinal matches Brett Rogers against Josh Barnett, with the winner to face Sergei Kharitinov. The finale will be held no later than early 2012.

MMA Today: dos Santos to face major test in Carwin

Junior dos Santos is a rising star in the Ultimate Fighting Championship. He recently served as coach of the 13th season of The Ultimate Fighter against former UFC heavyweight champion Brock Lesnar. He carries an impressive 12-1 mark with victories over Fabricio Werdum, Roy Nelson, Mirko Filipovic and Gabriel Gonzaga.

He is personable. And his punches hit like a brick.

MMA Today: Pettis aims to be known for more than 'The Kick'

LAS VEGAS -- Anthony Pettis wants to be known for more than just "The Kick."

Pettis, who earned a decision Ben Henderson in December to win the World Extreme Cagefighting lightweight title before the company was absorbed into the Ultimate Fighting Championship, was the subject of ESPN highlights and YouTube success with a maneuver at the end of the fight. Pettis leapt off his left leg, planted his right leg on the side of the fence and sprung off the fence to deliver a kick to Henderson's jaw. While the kick did not end the fight, it was the crowning moment on a brilliant performance.

"It's huge," Pettis said. "I think the kick is bigger than anything I've done so far. It's a catch-22 though. A lot of people just remember me for the kick, and they think that's all I am, a one-kick wonder. But, for me since I just don't want to be remembered just for the kick, it's one of the defining moments of my career."
