Prep basketball: Wolves thrashed in 5-A first round

WEST VALLEY CITY -- It was one and not so well done for Fremont in the state 5-A playoffs this year.

Region 1 fourth-seeded Fremont went up against top seed West Jordan on Tuesday afternoon, fell behind early and got spanked by the Jaguars 68-38 at the Maverick Center for an unusual early exit from the tournament.

Prep basketball: Knights survive first round, advance

WEST VALLEY CITY -- This one was really ugly, but Northridge is not going to give it back.

In a game no one wanted to win, the Knights escaped a first round upset in the state 5-A boys basketball tournament with a dramatic 43-41 overtime victory against Copper Hills in the Maverik Center on Tuesday afternoon.

Prep basketball: Lakers make early 4-A exit

WEST VALLEY CITY -- They laid the portable basketball court on top of an ice sheet.

That might explain Bonneville's frosty shooting on Monday afternoon at the Maverick Center.

Making their first appearance in six years, the Lakers slipped out of the state 4-A tournamentby falling to Olympus 51-37 in an opening round matchup against a number one seed.

Prep basketball: Lakers top Bees in 4-A play-in game

WASHINGTON TERRACE -- It has snowed more recently in Utah than the last time the Bonneville boys basketball team has found its way into the state tournament.

Mapping out a successful game plan of 20-plus free throws and 10 or less turnovers, the Lakers broke out of a third quarter tie and sailed into the state 4-A playoffs for the first time since the 2005-06 season with a 63-52 victory over Box Elder on Friday evening.

Prep basketball: Darts give Knights a wake-up call

KAYSVILLE -- For the past few years, the roles have been reversed.

Davis was usually near the top of the region standings at this time of the season and Northridge would be playing out the string or jockeying for position in the upcoming state tournament.

Things changed last week when the Knights won their first league title in 10 years and Davis was now trying to lock up a third-place seed in the upcoming state 5-A playoffs.

Knights win, claim Region 1 championship

LAYTON -- That's a wrap.

On a magical night in their kingdom, the Knights gave first year head coach Chad Sims a special gift, their first region championship in 10 years, as Northridge fought off Weber 53-45 to capture the crown with one game left in league play.

Prep basketball: Eagles throttle rival Jayhawks

LAYTON -- Layton Christian had a sweetheart of a basketball game on Valentines Day as the Eagles easily overcame a shaky first quarter and flew by St. Joseph 68-26 on Tuesday evening in Region 17 action.

"We were all fired up and hyper early on," said Layton Christian assistant head coach Ed Thompson. "We were taking too many 3s, but once we got inside and settled down a bit we turned out OK."

Prep basketball: Lancers nab long-awaited win against Darts

LAYTON -- For Layton, it must have felt like forever ago.

'It' is the last time the boys basketball team defeated Davis and 'it' happened for the first time since the 2003-04 season on Friday evening when the Lancers dumped the Darts for their first Region 1 victory of the season.

Boys basketball: Warriors take care of Darts

KAYSVILLE -- This time the numbers don't lie.

Weber dominated all key statistical categories and rode a strong second half to sweep the season series against Davis with a 56-42 dusting of the Darts on Tuesday evening.

At the risk of brain warp, some of the mind-numbing numbers include a 36-23 rebounding advantage and 23-of-26 from the free throw line for the Warriors. Weber held Davis to 29.4 percent from the floor and 0-of-10 from the 3-point line in the second half while shooting 69.2 percent in the second stanza from the field to finish at 50 percent for the game.

Prep basketball: Knights take over Region 1

LAYTON -- Like Lady Gaga, Northridge's boys basketball team is 'On the Edge of Glory' following its 48-44 victory over cross-town rival Layton on Friday evening.

With Fremont's loss to Weber, the Knights (10-7 overall, 5-1 league) are in sole possession of first place in Region 1 as they start the second half of the schedule.

"We want to be great; we have big dreams for this team," said Northridge guard Preston Christensen. "We have a long way to go and we need to keep working hard and stay hungry."

Prep basketball: Knights down Darts in key Region 1 battle

LAYTON -- It is sometimes difficult to tell the flavor of a game by the final score.

Such was the case Tuesday evening when Northridge and Davis went into the fourth quarter tied at 28 before the Knights stepped up their defense and made some key free throws down the stretch to taste victory in a 47-38 battle, staying tied with Fremont for first place in Region 1.

Prep basketball: Darts win, jump into share of 1st place

KAYSVILLE -- Someone should tell Abel Porter he is only a sophomore.

Just don't expect his teammates to treat him like one.

Porter, a 6-foot 1 point guard for Davis, drove the lane to make a tying basket, was fouled on the play and then converted the free throw with 15.7 seconds remaining to lead the Darts into a first-place Region 1 tie by taking down Fremont 47-44 on Friday evening.

Prep basketball: Hutchins, Lakers trump tough-luck Roy

WASHINGTON TERRACE -- Maybe Jake Hutchins should play hurt more often.

Hutchins, a 6-foot 3 senior forward, scored 21 points with a heavily-bandaged shooting hand to lead Bonneville over an under-manned but scrappy Roy squad 67-49 in a Region 5 matchup Wednesday evening.

Prep basketball: Darts hit their mark in victory

KAYSVILLE -- By design, Davis would like to hold their opponents somewhere between 10 and 12 points per quarter, so on the surface, the Darts' 57-48 victory over Layton on Friday evening was right on target.

But it belies the fact that the Darts gave up 16 and 18 point periods mixed in with a pair of single digit quarters, on the heels of a 24-point fourth quarter meltdown against Weber on Tuesday.

Prep basketball: Knights slowly chip away at Syracuse

LAYTON -- It's been said that slow and steady wins the race.

While the pace wasn't necessarily slow, Northridge steadily built a lead in each successive quarter and had its largest margin at the buzzer as the Knights wore down Syracuse 51-44 on Tuesday evening.
