Deer camp puts focus on helping military veterans

CARP, Minn. -- It was the kind of thing you'd see at any deer camp -- blaze orange everywhere, coffee brewing on the woodstove, chili heating in the kitchen -- but there was something special happening at the Levasseur camp in Lake of the Woods County on this second Saturday of Minnesota's firearms deer season.

The spirit of camaraderie, of sharing the magic of the hunt with others, was the order of the day.

For Steve Levasseur, who built the 24x38 log cabin that overlooks the Rapid River southwest of Baudette, Minn., about 10 years ago, there's a lot of history here. The small town of Carp exists only in memory now, but it's where Levasseur grew up, where he's hunted and killed his fair share of deer since he started going afield nearly 50 years ago.

These days, Levasseur says, it's not about him shooting a deer. It's about helping others experience the thrill of the hunt and the simple pleasures of camp life.

Deer might not be as abundant this year as they've been some other seasons, but there was no shortage of hospitality last weekend.

With hiring of new manager, Audubon nature center aims to be premier tourism destination

WARREN, Minn. -- As an avid birder and nature lover, Heidi Hughes says the first two months at her new job have only deepened her passion for the prairies and aspen parklands many people in northwest Minnesota take for granted.

Her goal is to share that passion with others.

"This is the section of the state that's the forgotten section," said Hughes, new manager of the Agassiz Audubon Society's nature center southeast of Warren. "You have to be kind of a special person to appreciate prairies and grasslands.

Study aims to determine most productive nesting cover for ducks

LAKE ALICE NATIONAL WILDLIFE REFUGE, N.D. -- The mallard hen exploded from the thick grass, startling the bejesus out of an unsuspecting reporter who came to his senses just in time to see the clutch of eggs concealed at his feet.

The encounter was more jolting than a stiff cup of coffee, but aside from a close call with cardiac arrest, no harm was done to human, duck or nest.

"Step on an egg, and it's a case of beer for the boys," Ryan Haffele joked from a few feet away. "That's our rule."

Whew . . . that was close.

Two boys fishing with Minnesota sturgeon 'ambassador' catch biggest fish of their lives

BAUDETTE, Minn. -- Grant Slukynsky is playing a sturgeon now, and judging by the bend in his pole, the fish is giving the 9-year-old everything he can handle.

We've been fishing less than 10 minutes.

Compared to this, scoring goals might be a walk in the park for the third-grader from Warroad, Minn., a boy of few words. It takes a bit of prodding, but Slukynsky admits he tickled the twine 19 times in five games during a recent hockey tournament in the Twin Cities.

North Dakota, Minnesota share in national success of national Families Afield program

GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- There's been a national focus in recent years to recruit new adult hunters, and the effort seems to be paying off.

The U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance sent out a news release highlighting that success recently, and it's a story worth sharing.

It all started in 2004, when the Alliance, along with the National Wild Turkey Federation and the National Shooting Sports Foundation, launched a program called Families Afield.

Minnesota's Dave Genz is ice fishing's pied piper

GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- Dave Genz, inventor of the Fish Trap portable ice fishing shelter, is widely known as the "Father of Modern Ice Fishing." He is an innovator who helped carry ice fishing from the days of sitting on a bucket and hoping for the best to an approach that relies heavily on mobility and electronics -- in Genz's case, the Vexilar flasher unit -- to see what's happening below the ice and trigger more fish into striking.

These days, Genz, who turned 63 on Saturday, travels the "ice belt" promoting the sport of ice fishing and the products that have helped make the winter pastime more enjoyable. He's a member of the pro staffs at Clam Corp., which markets the Fish Trap and other ice fishing shelters, and Vexilar. He also is a member of the Minnesota Fishing Hall of Fame.

Just waiting for something to happen on a lonely opening day

ROSEAU COUNTY, Minn. -- There's not much to do in a deer stand when the deer aren't moving, and there aren't any opportunities to fire a shot.

And so, you create your own amusements.

Middle school students help prep deer hides for Hides for Habitat program

EAST GRAND FORKS, Minn. -- Scraping the fat and meat and other nastiness off deer hides and rubbing them down with salt might not be a job for the squeamish, but that didn't stop students from Central Middle School in East Grand Forks from diving right in to the task at hand.

CROWDUCK LAKE, Manitoba, Canada -- Bill Kolansky's vision for running a fishing camp requires long days and an attention to detail that has to be experienced firsthand to fully comprehend.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- Fisheries crews from the Department of Natural Resources in Baudette, Minn., are getting their fill of behemoth fish these days as they study lake sturgeon populations on Lake of the Woods and Rainy River.

Northern Minnesota caller wins national title at recent North American Goose Calling Championships

THIEF RIVER FALLS, Minn. -- Cory Loeffler has had a passion for geese -- watching them fly, trying to lure them into the decoys with a well-delivered call -- since an uncle first took him hunting a dozen years ago.

Massive Manitoba lake lives up to reputation as one of North America's hottest new winter walleye destinations

SOMEWHERE ON LAKE WINNIPEG, Manitoba -- Immersed in a shroud of fog and bouncing across the icy surface of a lake that now was covered with nearly a foot of water and slush, it occurred to me that someone who'd never icefished might find this whole experience a bit unsettling.
