Leaky roof plagues city hall interior

PLAIN CITY — Problems with a leaking roof have damaged several areas in City Hall, according to Councilman Brett Ferrin.

Letter example of vicious tone, misinformation

(UNEDITED) The recent letter to the editor ironically titled "Van Hooser will work to create unity", written by Dorrene Jeske, is a perfect example of the vicious tone and misinformation that is part of the problem, not the solution. I will correct here, with facts, the misrepresentations.

First, Ms. Jeske stated that I was removed from the League of Cities and Towns legislative committee. This is not true. In fact, from a list of statewide candidates, I was appointed twice to the Executive Board of the League of Cities and Towns, where I served faithfully for both of my terms. As a part of this responsibility, I often had the opportunity during the legislative session to attend the League legislative meetings with support from other assigned Council Members and staff representatives.

Business campaign donations are not unethical

Recently, a local group that calls themselves the Ogden Ethics Project sent a checklist to each candidate running for Ogden city mayor and city council and asked them to voluntary limit their campaign fundraising efforts. Although most of the ideas on the list were reasonable and basically included in current fundraising laws, there was one idea that is nothing more than anti-business sentiment and suggests it is somehow unethical to receive campaign donations from business entities, unions or other organizations.

Why the Ogden council veto override was a mistake

As the two members of the Ogden City Council who opposed the insertion of the policy statements into the city budget by the majority of the city council and, therefore, voted against overriding the mayoral veto, we wish to express a few thoughts regarding the issue.

One important fact is that these controversial policy statements are very unique. Never has a city council tried micromanaging the activities of an administration in this way anywhere in the state of Utah, maybe even anywhere in the entire country. These policy statements are so unique because they are extremely specific. They not only define a level of service at a specific property, but they also define just how this service must be administered to the community.
