Barrel race betting begins in Florida

GRETNA, Fla. -- After Dixie Wonder Bugs circled three barrels and crossed the finish line a half second ahead of Jack's Eliminator on Thursday, Brenda Wolfran jumped up off the metal bleachers with her ticket and headed to the betting window.

"I'm going to be rich!" said Wolfran, 63, of Kinard, with more than a hint of exaggeration. She'd put $10 down on the horse and rider Dallas Dewees. The bet paid $15. As she walked back to the bleachers, she yelled to her friends, "I can't carry it all!"

(REINHOLD MATAY/The Associated Press) Republican presidential candidate former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney speaks at a town hall meeting in The Villages, Fla. While others focus on Iowa’s caucuses or New Hampshire’s first-in-the-nation primary, Mitt Romney is set to spend the day in Florida _ and it’s the only early voting state he’s visiting this week, just five weeks before voting begins.

Romney the 1st GOP candidate to plant flag in Fla.

MEDLEY, Fla. — If there’s any Republican presidential candidate who can afford to spend precious time and money focusing on winning in Florida, it’s the one campaigning here Tuesday.

Jim Morrison pardon called cheap, political ploy

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- A woman who said she was married to The Doors singer Jim Morrison said Thursday that Florida's intention to pardon him for a 1969 indecent exposure conviction is a cheap political ploy.

Patricia Kennealy Morrison told The Associated Press she's not pleased with the pardon and doesn't think the late singer would be either because he didn't expose himself on stage as some claim. The conviction should be expunged or the verdict overturned as fraud rather than just pardoned, she said.

Morrison pardon papers paint picture of wild night

TALLAHASSEE, Fla. -- It's a strange sheaf of documents for Florida's governor to have. The thick notebook describes how Jim Morrison discussed sex with a lamb he held on stage, ordered fans to "love your neighbor 'til it hurts" and later, at trial, defended his boozy singing to a prosecutor.

But did the lead singer of The Doors show his genitals to the crowd at the 1969 concert in Miami, a charge on which he was famously convicted? Gov. Charlie Crist wants to posthumously pardon him of indecent exposure and profanity convictions, and the governor's last chance is coming up at a Clemency Board meeting next Thursday. Crist leaves office in January.
