Chief Afuvai made North Ogden a safer place

Editor,

Upon the occasion of his retirement, I want to thank Chief Polo Afuvai for his 31 years of dedicated service as North Ogden’s chief of police. Chief Afuvai has served with unquestioned integrity, complete honor, and high distinction and will be sorely missed.

Equalizing Weber sheriff's costs a fair solution

Editor,

Thank you, Sheriff Terry Thompson, for doing the right thing and equalizing the cost of providing municipal police services throughout Weber County. Previously, the costs were not standardized and taxpayers in many cities were subsidizing the services provided by the sheriff’s department to certain other cities. Equalizing the service costs and charging each city the full cost of services rendered was the fairest solution for all taxpayers in Weber County. While this has caused understandable discomfort for those cities who—through no fault of their own—were being subsidized, it was still the right thing to do.

Haws lost debates, then went for cheap shot

It was painfully clear in the recent debates that Gary Haws does not have the management or budget experience necessary to run the Weber County Sheriff's Office. Haws has certainly given honorable and noble service as a police officer at the patrolmen level, but according to his website biography he has zero police leadership experience at the (UNEDITED)Sergeant or higher level. On the other hand, Terry Thompson has served as a precinct commander, as the Chief Deputy for Corrections, is a certified jail commander, and is currently the Chief Deputy for Law Enforcement. He has the leadership and management experience that are prerequisites to run a large Sheriff's Office that has over 400 employees and a $34 million dollar budget. Managing this many employees and this big of a budget is not something that is learned through "on-the-job training," and we need a qualified Sheriff starting on day 1.  Completely lacking the depth of experience to serve as Sheriff and clearly losing at every debate, Haws apparently decided to resort to "last minute" cheapshots such as going to the Standard Examiner and releasing the completely unproven Hatch Act complaint against Terry Thompson just 12 days before the election.
