Clooney arrested in protest at Sudanese Embassy

WASHINGTON -- George Clooney and his father were arrested Friday during a protest outside the Sudanese Embassy, and the actor said he has asked President Barack Obama to engage China on stopping a humanitarian crisis in northern Africa.

Clinton flies home to fete Kennedy Center honorees

WASHINGTON — Secretary of State Hillary Rodham Clinton joined in celebrating the nation’s top artists receiving the Kennedy Center Honors on Sunday while home for less than 36 hours between diplomatic travels.

Details unfold in shots fired at White House, Idaho suspect

WASHINGTON -- A man clad in black who was obsessed with President Barack Obama pulled his car within view of the White House at night and fired shots from an assault rifle, cracking a window of the first family's living quarters while the president was away, authorities said about their still-developing investigation.

The Secret Service found two bullets had hit the White House and agents caught up with Oscar Ramiro Ortega-Hernandez in Pennsylvania on Wednesday after a four-day search. Police arrested the 21-year-old Idaho man at a hotel after a desk clerk recognized his picture. Ortega was scheduled to make his first appearance at 2 p.m. Thursday in federal court in Pittsburgh. Many questions remained about his motive and background.

U.S. library to save famous baseball, country tunes

WASHINGTON -- The 1908 tune, "Take Me Out to the Ball-game," that became the anthem for America's favorite pastime, will be preserved at the Library of Congress, along with 24 other recordings chosen for their cultural significance, the library announced Wednesday.

This year's selections for the National Recording Registry include Tammy Wynette's 1968 country song that divided American women with the message, "Stand By Your Man."

WASHINGTON -- The National Archives and Provo-based Ancestry.com published newly digitized Civil War records online for the first time Wednesday, allowing users to trace family links to the war between North and South.
