Knicks’ J.R. Smith wins NBA Sixth Man award

GREENBURGH, N.Y. — J.R. Smith won the NBA’s Sixth Man of the Year award Monday after turning a role he didn’t want into one of the strengths of the New York Knicks’ first division championship team in nearly two decades.

Smith received 484 points, including 72 first-place votes, from a panel of 121 writers and broadcasters. The Clippers’ Jamal Crawford finished second with 352 points, getting 31 first-place votes.

Smith averaged 18.1 points in 80 games, all off the bench. He had 29 games in which he scored 20 points as a reserve, tying Crawford for the NBA lead.

What happened and what didn’t on NBA deadline day

The NBA’s trade deadline came and went Thursday without a season-changing deal. In question-and-answer form, here’s a look at what happened:

Q: SO, THE TRADE DEADLINE HIT THURSDAY AFTERNOON. THERE WAS A LOT OF ACTION, RIGHT?

A: No, except for NBA fans frantically hitting refresh on their Twitter feeds in hopes of seeing something interesting. There were nine deals, but the day was more about what didn’t happen than what did. Josh Smith is staying in Atlanta, Utah is keeping both Al Jefferson and Paul Millsap, and J.J. Redick was the biggest name that was moved, going from Orlando to Milwaukee.

The Worm Turns: Rodman writes book for children

NEW YORK — Even Dennis Rodman laughs at the idea.

"Kind of funny, huh?" he said.

It's true, though. One of basketball's most outrageous personalities has written a book for kids.

NBA fines Spurs $250,000 for sending starters home

The NBA fined the San Antonio Spurs $250,000 on Friday for sending four players home Thursday before their game Thursday night in Miami.

Commissioner David Stern said in a statement that the Spurs "did a disservice to the league and our fans" when they didn’t bring Tim Duncan, Tony Parker, Manu Ginobili or Danny Green to Miami for the final game of their six-game road trip.

Gregg Popovich sent his best players home, deciding they reached the end of the road before the trip was over.

San Antonio’s game notes still listed Tim Duncan and Tony Parker as probable starters, when it was already definite they’d be long gone before the Spurs tipped off in Miami.

Dishonest?

Absolutely.

But to what extent?

Nets’ Williams open to 2014 basketball worlds

NEW YORK — Two-time Olympic gold medalist Deron Williams of the Brooklyn Nets said Monday he would be "definitely open" to playing for the United States in the 2014 World Cup of Basketball.

Williams, the former Jazzman who helped the Americans win the gold medal in Beijing in 2008 and defend their title last month in London, said he loves representing the U.S. and wouldn’t rule out returning for a third Olympics in four years.

Dream comes true for U.S. men's basketball team

LONDON — This was no Dream Team. This was reality.

The gold medal was in doubt for the U.S. men’s basketball team.

The Americans led Spain by only one point after three quarters, a back-and-forth, impossible-to-turn-away-from game that almost anyone would hope for in an Olympic final.

Griffin, Harden, Iguodala round out U.S. Olympic roster

LAS VEGAS — Blake Griffin, Andre Iguodala and James Harden were chosen Saturday to complete the roster for the U.S. Olympic basketball team.

They earned the final three spots that opened after a rash of injuries knocked out at least four players who would have been on the team. They beat out Eric Gordon, Rudy Gay and No. 1 draft pick Anthony Davis of New Orleans, who couldn’t scrimmage this week because of a sprained ankle.

Also heading to London for the defending gold medalists are: LeBron James, Kobe Bryant, Carmelo Anthony, Chris Paul, Deron Williams, Kevin Durant, Russell Westbrook, Tyson Chandler and Kevin Love.

U.S. names 20-player men's Olympic basketball pool

NEW YORK -- This U.S. basketball team might be even better than the last two that won gold medals.

"This will be the most talented of the three teams that I've had the opportunity to coach," coach Mike Krzyzewski said Monday during a conference call.

The Americans announced the 20 players who will be candidates for the London Games, adding Blake Griffin of the Clippers and LaMarcus Aldridge of Portland to the 18 holdovers from either the 2008 Olympics or 2010 world championship who have said they wish to be considered again.

NEW YORK -- Jerry Colangelo has been speaking to the best American basketball players, asking if they still want to play in the Olympics.

All of them say they do.

The next step is seeing which ones will have the chance.
