Getting cut from a sports team a devastating reality

One of the key components of high school is sports. The stereotypes are countless -- the jocks get the girls, the attention, and who could forget about the lettermen?

There's always a lot of talk about those who are on the sports teams and what they do. But what about those students who don't make the sports teams, where's all the talk about them?

A rewarding high school experience requires balance

Friends, prom, football games, homecoming week and many other things all contribute to what is known as The High School Experience. "Get Involved" -- we hear it all the time and for some this contributes to a memorable time at this period of life.

However, during high school reality is that the social aspects aren't everything that is going on in our lives. We also have seemingly endless amounts of homework, tests, jobs and other responsibilities. Finding balance is something that can be hard to do.

Layton High band wins battle after 'epic' performance

OGDEN -- "LHS! LHS! Mere Image! Mere Image!" the crowd shouted at the conclusion of the ninth annual Battle of the Bands.

The crowd roared after hearing that Layton High School's representative, Mere Image, had won the competition, although Fremont High's Stegosaurus had the crowd screaming "weekends, parties, late nights, ladies, rock 'n' roll."

BUDGETING 101: It all comes down to wants vs. needs

Teenagers are notorious for not being able to handle money.

Teenagers live in a fantasy world where, for the most part, everything is handed to them. The majority of teens don't have to pay for their shelter, food or other basic needs. So the money that teenagers do have can be spent on just about anything, whether it is practical and needed or not.

For adults, this is concerning because as teenagers we are the future of our country. Once we exit this fantasy world we will enter the harsh conditions of reality where money is a necessity just to be alive, let alone to enjoy yourself.

It is important to start being conscious of our spending habits and money now so that when we are older we will have already developed good habits.

Clip, Clip ... Ka-ching!

How would you like to have a free supply of health and beauty items that is large enough to last you for years on end and occasionally even be paid to take it out of the store?

While your average teenager was out swimming, hiking and enjoying other festivities associated with summer, I was working on my summer job -- couponing.

Summer survival 101

"There's 104 days of summer vacation til school comes along just to end it. So the annual problem for our generation is finding a good way to spend it."

-- Phineas and Ferb

We cannot all be as fortunate as Phineas and Ferb and spend our summer days finding mummies, building rockets and climbing the Eiffel Tower.

REALITY CHECK: Driving comes with its own set of responsibilities

For 16 years the main focus of all our existence is based upon one seemingly magical number in which a teenager believes the world will instantly become simpler -- no longer having to rely on others for rides and finally having a taste of freedom.

With seat belts buckled and car keys in hand, the awaited age of 16 and getting a driver's license is the focus of all teenagers alike. But this glamorized coming of age, although exciting, has more to the story than simply being allowed a license.

Is it love? Or something like it?

"I love him! We're going to be together forever and ever! He's so cute and we've been going out for two whole weeks! I just know he's The One!"

One month later ...

"Oh I hate him! He's the biggest jerk! I never even liked him; I just went out with him because I didn't want to hurt his feelings!"

Oh really? Because that's not what you were saying less than a month ago.

Sorry, people, beautiful doesn't come in a bottle

We live in a society surrounded by images of female bodies used to sell everything from fast food to cars. With all these images surrounding us teen girls, imposing standards of beauty, there is reason for concern.

According to the Dove Campaign for Real Beauty, 7 in 10 girls believe they are not good enough in some way, one of every four college-age women has used unhealthy methods of weight control, and 35 percent of girls ages 6 to 12 have been on at least one diet.

Utah Jazz forward Paul Millsap goes for a layup during the team’s recent home game against Memphis.

Wonder what's the fuss behind all that Jazz stuff?

The NBA record for the most career assists -- 15,806. And who is responsible for this tremendous record? John Stockton, one of the Utah Jazz's very own players. He is also the NBA's all-time leader in career steals and has many other records.

We are lucky enough to live in a state where we have a professional basketball team within close range of our homes. This isn't just any other average team either; we have had remarkable and widely known players such as Karl Malone and John Stockton.

Bad habits could leave you with fewer friends

With the Internet becoming more accessible, the popularity of the famous social networking site Facebook expands every day -- with both good and bad consequences.

There are more features and capabilities and more people to share these with, but there is also more room for conflict among Facebook users. In order to avoid said conflict, we have compiled a list of what some Top of Utah teens say are the "Do's and Don't's of Facebook."
