After tumultuous week, Alex Smith ready to move on in return to 49ers

Exhibiting a touch of bravado, Alex Smith officially returned Wednesday as the 49ers' quarterback, a win-or-bust job that almost became Peyton Manning's.

Steve Young supports 49ers trying to land Manning

Former 49ers quarterback Steve Young emphatically backed the 49ers' pursuit of Peyton Manning, and vice versa. Young, now an ESPN analyst, had this to say on "SportsCenter" on Friday:

"Really smart. Trent Baalke did the research and Jim Harbaugh threw with Peyton Manning. They didn't get on the front pages.

49ers' Alex Smith shedding game-manager label

Alex Smith's game-winning touchdown pass Saturday to Vernon Davis worked almost as planned in the 49ers' 36-32 divisional playoff game against the Saints. Yes, almost as planned.

Lining up to Davis' left was fellow tight end Justin Peelle, who hoped to draw linebacker Scott Shanle farther away from the play to create a better passing lane for Smith.

Smith gives 49ers an assist

Apparently it's time to come up with a nickname for defensive end Justin Smith's fumble-forcing play that clinched the 49ers' comeback victory Sunday at Philadelphia.

"That is the defensive equivalent of 'The Catch,"' defensive coordinator Vic Fangio said Thursday.

Fangio understands Smith's heroics came in merely the fourth regular season game, not quite the stage as Dwight Clark's game-winning touchdown reception against the Dallas Cowboys amid the "luster" of the NFC Championship game on Jan. 10, 1982.

From Rodgers to Brady, Northern California a quarterbacks hotbed

It's official: Northern California is the nation's quarterback hotbed.

That ceremonial distinction came Sunday thanks to Super Bowl MVP Aaron Rodgers and NFL regular-season MVP Tom Brady.

Next up on Al-catraz: Hue Jackson

WALNUT CREEK, Calif. -- Hue Jackson will be introduced as the Oakland Raiders coach Tuesday. And he will be fired ... in two seasons, one season or by Thanksgiving?

Jackson better be a cutting-edge, offensive innovator who returns the Raiders to greatness, of which an 8-8 campaign does not qualify.

Martin Garcia's journey from deli cook to Preakness-winning jockey is a sensational, storybook tale.

Time for Sharks' coach to put aside past allegiances

This series will define Todd McLellan's capabilities.

Not as a man, father, friend or neighbor. But as the Sharks coach.

We're less than a week removed from the 25th anniversary of the Joe Montana-vs.-Dan Marino Super Bowl at Stanford Stadium.
