Prep basketball: Darts roll up big lead in victory over Titans

SYRACUSE -- The Davis Darts once again built a double-digit lead on the road at Syracuse.

This time they didn't let go.

A year after watching a 27-point lead evaporate in a 49-47 loss to the Titans, Davis used a barrage of Jace Johnson early and a parade of Karter Chisholm free throws late to hold Syracuse at bay in a 66-56 victory.

Prep basketball: Warriors escape Syracuse with win

SYRACUSE -- The Weber Warriors knew they were going to have to absorb the best shot from a suddenly reeling Syracuse team.

And the Titans nearly delivered the knockout blow.

However a potential game-tying 3-point hoist by Jordan Jones drifted right and allowed the Warriors to escape with a 49-46 decision, dealing Syracuse its fourth straight loss.

Prep basketball: Knights topple Lancers in reunion

LAYTON -- It ended up being a storybook ending, just not the one most people would have figured.

In front of a raucous home crowd, Layton's Kade Petersen, Northridge's leading scorer a year ago, took on his former teammates. Petersen scored 23 points, but the Knights got the victory as sophomore Jacob Bigler, who had 19 points to his credit all season coming in, dropped in 16 points on 6-for-8 shooting to give Northridge a 57-46 win in the Region 1 opener.

One more title shot for former Lancer

LAYTON -- Chad Willson is banking on the third time being a charm.

The former Layton High standout and Standard-Examiner All-Area Football MVP has earned his way into his third title game and is determined to walk off the field with a different result than his prior two attempts.

Willson, 21, now a 221-pound senior outside linebacker at North Dakota State University in Fargo, will lead the second seeded Bison into the FCS championship game against top-ranked Sam Houston State on Jan. 7 at Pizza Hut Park in Frisco, Texas.

Prep basketball: Lancers get back to .500, whip Panthers

LAYTON -- Both the Lancers and Panthers came into Friday night's non-league boys basketball matchup eager to halt losing skids.

After starting 2-0, Layton had dropped three straight, however West proved to be the ideal opponent to help it right the ship as the Lancers moved back to .500 with a 57-39 victory.

The Titans won 10-0 and will battle Fremont in the semifinals next week. The Silver Wolves defeated defending champion Bingham 27-20 in Plain City on Friday.

Prep football: Titans win, set up showdown with Fremont

SALT LAKE CITY -- On a chilly, blustery day that only the guys in the trenches could love, Syracuse's linemen showed up for Friday's 5-A quarterfinal matchup with their hard hats and lunch pails.

The defense shuttered a West offense averaging over 24 points per game, while the offensive line wore out the mammoth Panther defensive front, springing the Titans for 179 rushing yards on 42 carries.

Prep football: Numbers all add up as Eagles advance

LAYTON -- It's been a long time coming for Layton Christian, which is what made Friday's outcome especially sweet.

In their eighth football campaign, after posting a 0-3 postseason record and getting outscored 116-0, the Eagles finally recorded their first playoff victory with a rousing come-from-behind win over Altamont, 28-21.

Prep football: Silver Wolves snare second straight region title

LAYTON -- The Fremont Silver Wolves came into Lancer Stadium Friday night with at least a share of the Region 1 championship locked up.

They walked out with full-fledged ownership for the second straight year.

Fremont once again used a devastating defensive effort to blast Layton, 40-0, in their regular season finale. The Silver Wolves allowed three total points in their final trio of league contests.

"(Winning region) was a goal that they had and I'm really proud that they were able to go undefeated again as region champs," Fremont coach Kory Bosgieter said. "That's a credit to the kids. We're happy; it's another step."

Power loss delays conclusion of Layton-Northridge showdown

LAYTON -- Friday night lights will have to make way for a Saturday afternoon matinee.

In the 20th meeting between cross-town rivals Layton and Northridge, a compelling game was brewing when the stadium lights went dark in the middle of a Lancer kickoff return.

Following nearly an hour delay, with just under six minutes left in the second quarter and the score knotted at seven apiece, the contest was postponed until 1 p.m. today at Northridge High School.

Prep football: Knights hang on to dump Titans

SYRACUSE -- Northridge and Syracuse combined to display a little something for everyone Friday evening.

The contest featured explosive offense, timely turnovers, a couple of flat out weird sequences and a game-saving play as time expired.

(NICHOLAS DRANEY/Standard-Examiner) Weber’s Brad Boswell (16) gets tackled by North-ridge’s Alex Trotter (23), Austin Tate (28) and Jaeger Allred (22) at Northridge High School in Layton on Friday.

Prep football: Knights hammer visiting Warriors

LAYTON -- If the Knights were going to go down to winless Weber, it was at least going to be on their own terms.

As it turned out, the outcome was never really in doubt as Northridge broke out its big-play arsenal, scoring early and and often in a 56-21 romp over the visiting Warriors.

"Coming out of the Fremont game (a 27-14 loss a week ago) we felt that we were too conservative in a tight game and that we needed to open it up and take more chances," Northridge coach Erik Thompson said. "We tried to do that tonight and fortunately I've got one of the best (quarterbacks) in the state and he made great decisions. (Weber) does a great job on defense confusing you and they bring pressure every time, but we just kept fighting and fortunately when we did make plays our kids finished and got into the end zone."

Prep football: Roy honors McMahon but Box Elder prevails

ROY -- On a night when Roy High honored one of football's most offensively accomplished players, the Royals failed to find a way to put any points on the scoreboard.

Credit the Box Elder defense, however, as the Bees forced six Roy turnovers -- including five in the second half -- to earn a 17-0 win in the Region 5 opener

for both teams.

Prep football: Bingham takes out fury on Lancers

LAYTON -- A week after taking it in the shorts, Bingham was on the giving end Friday night.

The two-time defending state champion Miners took their 26-game winning streak on the road and got blitzed 42-7 by California's Orange Lutheran on Saturday. They wasted no time in righting the ship back in Utah as they raced out to a 41-7 halftime lead over Layton before recording a 47-13 victory. The Miners haven't lost an in-state game since Alta beat them in the 2008 state title contest.

"They're the number one ranked team in the state and you wonder how good they are and what level you have to get to and now we know that we're a long way off," Layton coach Jim Batchelor said. "We got physically manhandled. They were more aggressive than us and they were more physical than us; they did anything they wanted to and we couldn't stop them."

Prep football: Knights hold off Cougars

LAYTON -- The Kearns Cougars came into Friday night's non-league contest having allowed a total of 13 points in its first two games.

The explosive Northridge offense surpassed that in just over eight minutes.

Prep football: Lancers' turnovers prove costly

LAYTON -- How quickly the tables can turn.

A week after picking off five passes in a decisive 28-0 season-opening win over Hunter, the Lancers gift-wrapped six turnovers Friday night helping the visiting Jordan Beetdiggers earn a 35-14 victory in preseason action.

"You can't spot them all those turnovers and think you're going to come out and win," Layton coach Jim Batchelor said. "As good as we played a week ago, that's how bad we played in the first half."
