Ogden candidates in Layton today

LAYTON -- A debate between mayoral candidates Mike Caldwell and Brandon Stephenson will take place at 11:30 a.m. today at the annual luncheon of the Northern Wasatch Association of Realtors.

Theology workshop planned in W. Haven

WEST HAVEN -- A two-day workshop called "Theology of the Body: The Spirituality of Becoming One" will be held from 6:30 p.m. to 9 p.m. Friday and 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. Saturday at St. Mary's Church, 4050 S. 3900 West, West Haven.

This presentation "will show how the story of the Scriptures, the Liturgy of the Mass and the story written into our own bodies all point to the same purpose of becoming one," a news release states.

Author to discuss war book at library

WASHINGTON TERRACE -- Arts International Association has invited author Rocky Olson to speak of his experiences in the Vietnam War as told in his book, "Sgt. Rock: Last Warrior Standing."

AIA members, guests and the public are invited to attend at 6:30 p.m. Monday at the Pleasant Valley Branch Library, 5568 Adams Ave., Washington Terrace.

Own in Ogden offers home-buying help

OGDEN -- The Own in Ogden Program is providing down payment and closing cost assistance to buyers who buy homes in specific neighborhoods of central Ogden.

Based on the location of the home, buyers can receive loans of $3,000 or $5,000 at zero interest with no payments required to help toward their purchase. The Own in Ogden Program serves future residents of the city by assisting 50 or more homebuyers a year, and has helped more than 1,400 households achieve home ownership during its existence.

Golf tourney to aid breast cancer effort

OGDEN — Happy Chemo is sponsoring a golf tournament to raise money and awareness for breast cancer.

Street paving to start Tuesday

HOOPER -- Staker and Parson Company was awarded a $286,963 bid to overlay several city streets, with paving to begin Tuesday.

Streets on the priority list are 5100 West from 3300 South to 4000 South, 6700 West from 4600 South north to the dead-end street, and 4600 South from 5500 West to the slough, which is almost to 5100 West. Public Works Department Director Jared Hancock said if funds are available from the bid, then other streets will also be considered for overlay.

Weber State offers orchestra program

OGDEN -- The Weber State University String Project is an after-school orchestra program at WSU's Ogden Campus that will start classes Monday.

Classes, for beginning to advanced students in violin, viola, cello or string bass, run Mondays and Wednesdays. The age for beginning students is third through sixth grades.

Registration is 4 p.m. to 6 p.m. Monday at the Val A. Browning Center, second-floor lobby, at WSU. Students will be able to rent instruments/purchase books on the spot.

Cost for the program is $60 per semester.

Fallen Heroes fundraiser set for Monday

OGDEN -- The Fallen Heroes Scholarship Foundation will have a fundraising dinner, silent auction and entertainment at 6 p.m. Monday at the Tavernacle Social Club and Piano Bar, 201 E. 300 South, Salt Lake City.

Dinner starts at 6 p.m., with entertainment from 7 p.m. to 9 p.m. Local businesses donating services to be auctioned off include Utah Olympic Park, Wendover Fun, Mesquite Nevada, Boondocks, Anniversary Inn, iFLY Utah, and Speed Street Racing.

Coffee party to meet Saturday

OGDEN -- The Ogden/Weber County Coffee Party will meet at 10 a.m. Saturday at Grounds for Coffee, 111 Historic 25th St.

4-H sets open house to recruit members

OGDEN -- 4-H is having an open house at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Utah State University Extension office 4-H office, 1181 N. Fairgrounds Drive, at the Weber County Fairgrounds.

Tri-county center celebrates independence Saturday

OGDEN -- Tri-County Independent Living Center is holding its annual Celebration of Independence today.

The celebration, to bring people with disabilities together with agencies and businesses that can help, will be held at Fort Buenaventura Park, 2450 "A" Ave., from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. There is no fee to enter.

Saturday will be 'Day for Kids'

OGDEN -- "A Day for Kids" will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Saturday at several Weber County locations, sponsored by the Boys and Girl Clubs of Weber-Davis with a grant from Weber RAMP.

Poker ride event to aid sick girl's family

OGDEN -- A motorcycle poker ride will be Saturday to benefit the family of Emalee Miller, a 9-year-old girl who needs a lung transplant.

West Haven checkpoint planned for Saturday night

WEST HAVEN -- An administrative checkpoint by Weber County Sheriff's Office, with assistance from the Utah Highway Patrol, will be on 1900 West in West Haven from 9:30 p.m. Saturday to about 2:30 a.m. Sunday.

Bear River Health offering flu shots

BRIGHAM CITY -- Flu shots and flu mist are now available at the Bear River Health Department. Clinics will be held from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. Monday through Thursday and from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Friday in the Logan and Brigham City offices.
