Prep basketball: Warriors pull away with stingy 'D'

LAYTON -- The Weber Warriors found themselves in a dogfight with the Layton Lancers Tuesday night.

Despite holding a one-point lead at the half, the Warriors turned up the defensive intensity and won their Region 1 game going away, 77-63, to wrap up the first half of region play.

Prep basketball: Knights victorious in final seconds

PLEASANT VIEW -- The statistics were eerily similar across the board. Both the Weber Warriors and the Northridge Knights had 22 field goals. They each had 25 rebounds apiece.

Friday's Region 1 game came down to the last shot in the final second of the game. Down by one, Northridge guard Preston Christensen took an inbounds pass the length of the floor with 7.4 seconds left on the clock and sank the winning runner from five feet out to propel the Knights to a thrilling 58-57 victory.

Prep basketball: Fremont smothers Bonneville

PLAIN CITY -- It didn't take long for the home crowd and the Fremont Silver Wolves to take control of their non-league game against the Bonneville Lakers on Tuesday night.

A smothering defense and an efficient offense helped the Silver Wolves jump out to a commanding 41-16 halftime lead and they cruised to a 60-36 victory.

"I thought that we executed on both sides of the ball, especially in the first half," Fremont coach Corey Melaney said. "We lost a little there in the second half, but we're always going to be a defensive team and that worked out for us tonight.

A late start in the sport didn't stop Ogden star from shining

OGDEN -- For many of today's youth, soccer usually starts at an early age. This happens at four or five years old when parents are excited to see their kids play a sport and have fun.

For Ogden's Cassie Hanson, the start of her soccer career came a little later.

"I started playing at a later age, like seven years old," Hanson said. "My best friend was playing and I went and watched a bunch of her games growing up. That's when I thought I would try to play soccer."

Prep football: Wolves dish out revenge on Miners

PLAIN CITY -- No one was talking about it, but in the minds of the Fremont High football team, Friday must have been a measure of sweet revenge.

Facing a Bingham Miners team that beat them last year in the state 5-A championship game, the Silver Wolves put together one of their best efforts of the season in dispatching the Miners 27-20 at Moyes Field.

Prep cross country: Davis dominates region meet

LAYTON -- They have put forth a ton of effort in getting ready to race one of the best courses in the state and it paid off handsomely for the Davis Darts.

The boys and girls cross country teams from Davis swept their way to another convincing region title Wednesday afternoon, continuing their dominance in the sport.

In the girls' race, Davis junior Shae Martinez put together another impressive display of power and grace in crossing the finish line a full 32 seconds ahead of teammate Madison Garlock as the Darts finished 1-2-3-4-8-9 to grab the team title with Martinez just missing her previous best at the Layton Commons Park course by one full second.

Prep football: Bees' last-gasp score turns Lakers away

BRIGHAM CITY -- It was homecoming for the Box Elder Bees Friday night and while celebrations were happening all over the place, the home team and home crowd saved the best one for last.

Trailing 17-13 with under a minute remaining in the game, Box Elder quarterback Brtton Gunter found a wide open McKay Parrish in the corner of the end zone to cap a thrilling

20-17 come from behind victory over the Bonneville Lakers in the second to last region game for both teams.

Prep baseball: Jayhawks finished in quarterfinals

SPANISH FORK -- The scoreline is a little deceiving considering the final score, but the St. Joseph Jayhawks represented the Top of Utah well, dropping a 12-2 game to the Tabiona Tigers in the state 1-A quarterfinals Tuesday afternoon.

"This was a tough one to swallow because we had them on the ropes," St. Joseph coach Dane Atkin said. "It looked like they were starting to tighten up some, but one call changed the momentum of the game and things sort of fell apart after that."

Roy High’s Jordan Beyer (20) tackles Bonneville’s Beck Nelson (22) in Washington Terrace on Friday. The Lakers won 13-0.

Prep football: Lakers shut out Royals, 13-0

WASHINGTON TERRACE -- In the latest edition of great games between rivals Roy and Bonneville, the host Lakers took advantage of a couple of Royals' turnovers and turn them into a 13-0 homecoming victory Friday night in Region 5 action.

"The past two weeks have been tough on us," Bonneville coach Randy Johnson said. "We played two tough teams up there (in Cache Valley) and we didn't have our full complement of players because they were banged up. We were kind of able to get back on track tonight, but we still have some things to work on to get better.

Prep baseball: Jayhawks headed to state tourney

WASHINGTON TERRACE -- The Jayhawks are headed to the state baseball playoffs again, only this time as the No. 2 seed from Region 17.

The St. Joseph Jayhawks went from a middle of the pack team in a seven-team league to the second-place squad in a four-team league and spent the past two days tuning up for the state 1-A tournament next week at Spanish Fork High School.

Prep football: Tigers tip visiting Bears

OGDEN -- For the first time in many years, the Ogden Tigers are sitting atop the Region 11 standings with a glossy 2-0 record after knocking off the Bear River Bears 20-9 in region action Friday night.

"I thought that we might be 2-0 at this point in region play," Ogden coach Troy Kolan said. "We needed to make some adjustments at halftime after failing to execute on the offensive side of the ball (including giving up that safety). Once we made that transition in the blocking scheme, we played well in the second half."

Ogden quarterback Anthony Sattiewhite gave up the first points of the game as he was brought down in the end zone for a safety and a 2-0 lead for Bear River. Both teams struggled to move the ball offensively at all the rest of the half, although the Bears did come up short on a 31-yard field goal with six minutes left in the second quarter.

Davis High School fans try to rally their team in the final minutes during Thursday's game against Lone Peak in Kaysville.

Prep football: Darts can't shake Lone Peak

KAYSVILLE -- It was an odd sight Thursday night to see the lights normally reserved for Friday in full bloom during the highly anticipated matchup between Davis and Lone Peak.

A few big plays were all the difference as Lone Peak walked away with a solid 21-10 victory in a battle of unbeaten teams.

Box Elder High quarterback Britton Gunter looks for an open man in the first half against Ogden last season. Gunter is back as the Bees’ signal-caller in 2011, holding together an offense that lost a lot to graduation in 2010.

Prep football: Bees focused on becoming top dog

BRIGHAM CITY -- They finished tied for the Region 5 football title last year, but until someone acutally knocks off the Mountain Crest Mustangs from their perch alone, Box Elder coach Robbie Gunter will keep the focus of his Bees players on winning each game as it comes.

"We have some serious holes to fill with the kids that graduated last year," Gunter said. "But the kids are working hard and trying to get back into playing the way we want to play. We don't have a lot of experience, but our struggles won't be for a lack of effort."

Prep football: Bears get back to the basics

GARLAND -- Back to the basics.

Bear River coach Chris Wise knows that if the Bears want to get back to the glory days (which isn't that long ago), his team is going to have to get back to the smashmouth type of football that made them three-time state title winners in 2003, 2004 and 2006.

Prep football: Johnson, Lakers ready to turn heads

WASHINGTON TERRACE -- It can be a difficult transition for a coach to go from calling all the shots to being an assistant coach, but that is the story of new Bonneville High coach Randy Johnson.

After spending 15 years as the head coach at Clearfield High in which he won a state title in 1993, Johnson ended up taking a risk that landed him an assistant coaching job at Bountiful.
