Marlins' McKeon continues using same approach

SEATTLE -- Hours before the umpire yelled "Play ball" on Saturday, manager Jack McKeon was sitting alone in some seats at Safeco Field, smoking a cigar and surveying a few of his pitchers throwing to each other on the outfield grass.

McKeon wasn't just killing time. He was studying, taking mental notes on which pitchers were putting in the extra work, doing the little things to make themselves better, and which were not.

"I watch these guys to see who runs and who doesn't run, so I got a little book on them, so I can have a little chat with some of them," McKeon said.

MIAMI -- John Buck kept it straight and simple at his introductory news conference last week, providing safe answers to a string of basic questions.

All eyes on Spurrier as Swamp return awaits

Never mind the nevers.

Steve Spurrier has never won in The Swamp -- as a visiting coach. South Carolina has never won in Gainesville. The Gamecocks have never won an SEC East title in football.

Florida Marlins' Fredi Gonzalez says he put a hex on no-hit bid

Manager Fredi Gonzalez wasn't exactly thrilled to see Garrett Atkins' seventh-inning home run break up Josh Johnson's no-hit bid in Friday's 6-5 win.
But the homer did end the decision Gonzalez was grappling with in the dugout about how long he would allow Johnson to pursue the no-hitter. Johnson, in his first full season back from Tommy John surgery, gave up one run and struck out a career-high 11 on 114 pitches in 7 1/3 innings. Gonzalez said he turned to pitching coach Mark Wiley in the dugout just before Johnson's 98th pitch -- which landed in the left-field seats.
"I may have jinxed him," Gonzalez said Saturday. "The way he was pitching, I thought he had a chance. I turned to Mark and said, '(Johnson's) got an extra day's rest (coming), right?' He said, 'Yes.' Then bam. Home run. I jinxed him -- that question."
