Costas says Ebersol leaves a lasting legacy at NBC

ST. LOUIS -- Dick Ebersol, who announced his resignation Thursday from NBC after running its sports division for 22 years and also being very influential on its entertainment side, leaves a legacy that the network's lead on-air personality says is immense.

Danton's target? His father

ST. LOUIS -- Former Blues center Mike Danton's bizarre saga, in which he served time in a murder-for-hire plot in 2004, is about to take a new twist. He says in an interview set to air Tuesday night on ESPN that his target was not the one alleged by the FBI.

Danton spent almost five years in jail for a failed scheme in which the FBI said the intended victim was David Frost, who had been Danton's agent, former coach and surrogate father. But Danton says on the "E:60" program that the man he wanted killed was his father, Steve Jefferson--whom Danton says was abusive when Danton was young.

Did TV drive Tuesday night football?

Tuesday Night Football is on tap in the NFL for the first time since 1946, but is the two-day delay of Minnesota's game at Philadelphia more related to acquiescing to the television networks than the weather?

The NFL announced at midday Sunday that the Vikings-Eagles game was being pushed back from Sunday night because of a major snowstorm that was brewing in Philadelphia and reset for 8 p.m. Eastern time Tuesday. NFL spokesman Greg Aiello said in part the long delay "will allow sufficient time to ensure that roads, parking lots and the stadium are fully cleared."

But the storm subsided by early Monday -- as forecast. And the hiatus beyond Monday night -- when postponed Sunday games long have been rescheduled -- has drawn cries that the decision was based more on TV contracts than competitive balance. While the Vikes are out of the playoff chase, the NFC East champion Eagles are playing for a first-round bye. But now they'll have only four days to prepare for their season finale vs. Dallas Sunday.

World Series, NFL go head-to-head Sunday night

ST. LOUIS -- It will be the national pastime vs. the national obsession Sunday night. Two days before election day across the country, TV viewers will vote with their remotes in a different kind of tally, this one run by Nielsen, that should produce some interesting results.

NFL draft helped ESPN establish credibility

ST. LOUIS -- The NFL draft, once such an afterthought that league commissioner Pete Rozelle was said to have asked in essence "Are you crazy?" when the idea of televising the event live was proposed to him, has become such a TV force that it will be broadcast in prime time for the first time when the first three rounds are held next Thursday and Friday.

Tiger Woods' return to Masters may not be shown live

There has been much talk about Tiger Woods picking the Masters for his comeback appearance because of the tightly controlled environment at Augusta National, thus providing a comfort zone for the world's most famous golfer to resume his career after his self-imposed exile.

Shaq's ready to slug it out with Albert Pujols in homer event

ST. LOUIS -- The Cardinals' Albert Pujols will tee off on Thursday night in his second home-run contest of the summer. This time he faces NBA All-Star Shaquille O'Neal at T.R. Hughes Ballpark in O'Fallon, Mo., after participating last month in baseball's Home Run Derby at Busch Stadium.
O'Neal is filming the match for "Shaq Vs.," the new television reality series that pits the basketball icon against some of the nation's top athletes.
Tickets for Thursday night's match are long gone, though some enterprising fans are selling seats on eBay for $100 or more.
O'Neal is no baseball novice. The self-proclaimed "T-ball all-star" played first base in high school.

Broadcasting All-Star Game in hometown should be less controversial than Joe Buck's recent HBO debut

The last time Joe Buck was in the spotlight, for the debut of his show on HBO a few weeks ago, Artie Lange ransacked the proceedings with a vulgar, profane appearance that created much controversy.
But things should be much more tranquil Tuesday night when Buck returns to the national stage by doing the play-by-play on Fox's telecast of the All-Star Game.
After all, his sidekick this time -- Tim McCarver -- has about as much chance of unloading a tirade as Lange does of being invited to appear on "Sesame Street."
