NFL draft preview: Defensive ends

Many teams in need of defensive ends will find what they are looking for on draft weekend. The 2012 crop of pass rushers is pretty strong, in terms of both top-end talent and depth. And it will need to be as a majority of teams is believed to be in the market for an upgraded pass rush.

NFL draft preview: middle linebackers

The 2012 class of middle linebackers is led by underclassmen Luke Kuechly of Boston College and Dont'a Hightower of Alabama. If neither player had declared himself eligible for the draft, it's possible no middle linebacker would have been chosen in the top two rounds. Even with the presence of Kuechly and Hightower, this still is a pedestrian group.

NFL draft preview: Safeties

There are more teams looking for safeties than there are desirable safeties in this draft. As a result, look for some to be drafted too high. Aside from Mark Barron, there aren't any safeties worth considering early in the draft and few worth considering before the late rounds.

NFL draft preview: Defensive tackles

This is not a bad crop of defensive tackles. There are several players who should have productive careers at every level of the draft, including in the first round. As many as six tackles are first-round considerations.

NFL draft preview: Tight ends

Many teams would love to find a big tight end who can run, catch and block like Rob Gronkowski, but they won't find one in this draft. The talent is limited, though the draft does offer some smaller, one-dimensional tight ends who won't be of much use in the running game, as well as a few players who could develop into decent receiving tight ends.

NFL draft preview: cornerbacks

This cornerback class features better quantity than quality. Teams will be able to find good values between the third and seventh rounds. Morris Claiborne and Stephon Gilmore are expected to go early, and there could be a dropoff before the next corner is selected.

NFL draft preview: wide receivers

This is a deep group of wide receivers. There are considerably more draftable players than at any other position. As a result, the order in which they are taken will depend as much on scheme fit as anything else. Many of the down-the-line prospects lack size and might not appeal to many teams.

NFL draft preview: centers

This is a weak group of centers, and it would be really weak if not for the Big Ten, which might have the top three taken. It is possible as few as seven will be drafted, though need likely will force some teams to pick players who might not have draftable grades.

Offensive tackles in high demand

As many as five offensive tackles could be chosen in the first round, which might say more about the NFL's desperation for blockers than it says about the quality of talent in the draft because the depth drops off considerably with the group likely to be overdrafted.

Belichick could be at peak performance for Super Bowl XLVI

INDIANAPOLIS -- Picking Bill Belichick's best coaching job is a little like choosing Rembrandt's preeminent painting, Bach's consummate composition or Shakespeare's greatest play.

And beauty is in the eye of the beholder.

But there is much to be said for what Belichick did in 2011, and if his Patriots beat the Giants in Super Bowl XLVI many will proclaim this his finest season.

Former Bear Bobby Douglass a prototype quarterback for Tim Tebow

CHICAGO -- Before there was Tim Tebow, before there was Michael Vick, before there was Randall Cunningham, before there was Steve Young, there was Bobby Douglass.

If you have a few gray hairs, you will remember old No. 10, who played quarterback for the Bears between 1969 and 1975.

And if you don't have a few gray hairs, pull up a chair and let me tell you about him and why he's significant today.

Bears' Matt Forte may be best bargain in NFL

Signing Matt Forte has proven more difficult than tackling him.

Forte's value has been as a moving target, shifting left, cutting right and then spinning away.

Lessons learned from Jay Cutler's first five years

CHICAGO -- In the biggest game of Jay Cutler's life, he laid an egg big enough to feed most of the people at Soldier Field. And when he couldn't play in the second half because of a knee injury, the haters accused him of being chicken.

The final days of Dave Duerson

This story was reported by Tribune reporters Dan Pompei, David Haugh, Vaughn McClure, Becky Yerak and Steve Schmadeke and written by Pompei.

They call it The City of Sun and Sea, the Venice of America.

Beautiful Sunny Isles Beach, Fla., is located on a barrier island surrounded by Miami, the Atlantic Ocean and the Intracoastal Waterway.

Bears' Martz taking better care of timeouts

CHICAGO -- When Mike Martz told Lovie Smith via his headset that the Bears needed to call a timeout on third-and-15 in the third quarter against the Packers, he didn't think Chester Taylor would convert because the players weren't aligned properly.

The play didn't count because Smith got an official's attention before the snap and called time out.

The Bears offense used three timeouts before the two-minute warning in the game. That might have led some to say, there goes "Mad Mike" again.
