Former ballplayer tries to do Justice justice in 'Moneyball'

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- David Justice was warming up for a game at Candlestick Park years ago when a young fan beckoned him over. It was Stephen Bishop, a Bay Area native and aspiring ballplayer, who wanted to share a personal connection with the Braves star. "My friends all say I look like you," Bishop told Justice.

To this day, Justice isn't so sure.

Joe Montana preaches patience for 49ers

When Joe Montana's youngest son was being recruited by Stanford, the 49ers' legendary quarterback came across a few calls from Jim Harbaugh's playbook.

It was like hearing his native tongue again. The terminology, the formations, the philosophy -- it was the language he spoke so fluently with Bill Walsh.

"Some of those plays were word for word exactly what I ran," Montana said Tuesday.

Kingman can still connect

STOCKTON, Calif. -- A leisurely afternoon with the Stockton Ports featured the wonderfully corny minor league promotions. There was a furry red mascot frolicking atop the dugout, an Asparagus Race featuring fans dressed as vegetables, and a beer batter -- $2 brews if the designated batter goes down on strikes.

As an added attraction Sunday, the Ports brought in King Kong.

Yes, that was Dave Kingman--the mighty and mercurial slugger--signing free autographs for nearly two hours as part of a Father's Day promotion. (He was dressed in a casual Hawaiian shirt and khaki slacks, unlike the poor sweltering mascot.)

The Say Hey, Kid is now the Say Hey, Octogenarian

As a jittery and insecure rookie, Willie Mays went 0 for 12 before finally breaking through with a home run off the great Warren Spahn.

"I'll never forgive myself," Spahn later joked. "We might have gotten rid of Willie forever if I'd only struck him out."

Nice try. Mays is still going strong as the Giants gear up for his 80th birthday celebration Friday night at AT&T Park. That's right, eightieth. That symbol of boyish enthusiasm, that ebullient icon of baseball's most glorious summers, is now the Say Hey Octogenarian.

49ers' Smith gets another shot, perhaps for last time

Alex Smith, back as the 49ers' starter, says he's a good quarterback.

"Absolutely," he said Wednesday. "I have the ability to make all the throws on the field. (I'm) athletic enough that I think I can make plays with my feet when I need to.

"I can handle I think any playbook out there, (any) adjustments you have to make. I think I can. Have I done that consistently? To be honest, no. That's what I need to do."

Playoffs not out of reach, 49ers say

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- On his way out the door as general manager, Scot McCloughan predicted greatness for the 49ers. "Players I brought in will win division for next couple of years," he said in a text message to this paper.

49ers quarterback Smith draws praise from coach Singletary

Mike Singletary held back on saying who would play quarterback after the 49ers' bye week, but it's no coincidence that he praised the exact qualities Troy Smith gave the coach last weekend.

Spud studs? Iupati embraces advice from Jerry Kramer

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- Mike Iupati could be the greatest offensive lineman from Idaho since Jerry Kramer, a fact not lost on Kramer himself. He was watching his alma mater one day when he saw a behemoth pull from his guard position, race downfield and smash a helpless defender.

Nedney's steady foot too much for robotic challenger

SAN FRANCISCO -- Billed as man vs. machine, Joe Nedney waged a field-goal contest against a robot Monday at Kezar Stadium.

49ers quarterback Alex Smith better but still flawed

Alex Smith's last appearance on "Monday Night Football" was humiliation on a national stage.

He missed open receivers. And he missed them by a lot.

Smith gets a fresh start with Niners

SANTA CLARA, Calif. -- Alex Smith is the San Francisco 49ers' starting quarterback again, apparently to stay.
