Wooden stayed true to his beliefs

I was at my senior party the night John Wooden died. I didn't hear about it until I turned on the news the next day, and it took a little while for it all to register that one of my greatest role models, best known for his college coaching career in UCLA basketball, was dead.

Cool Summer Jobs

Wouldn't it be great to hang out at an amusement park or sit by a pool all day -- and get paid?

Writing decision one of the wisest

Browsing through the Standard-Examiner one summer morning while munching my cereal I came across the blurb about how to apply for a TX. writer.

Drawn-out athletic recruitment process worth it in the end

I still remember the exact time and date I got the text from my mom saying the college I would eventually sign with had just offered me a scholarship to come play volleyball for them: March 31, 2010, 12:41 p.m. I had to grab onto the counter to keep myself steady. Finally, my experience of getting recruited for women's collegiate volleyball was almost over.

Never fear trying something new

I'm graduating soon. I don't think this really hit me, despite the numerous college applications or the overflowing mailbox of fliers for last-minute senior pictures, until I really looked at the calendar and realized June 4 is right around the corner.

Never been kissed? Don't worry about it

I've done a lot of things in my life, but kissing isn't one of them. Yes, I'm one of those rare people who's VL, or virgin lips.
It wasn't until girls' camp last year, when everyone was telling their kissing stories (these stories always come up at girl's camp) and only one other girl claimed the same status as me, that I realized I was a small minority.
From the gist of the stories I heard that night, I concluded kissing at such a young age isn't all that the movies make it out to be.
"I think the media seems to have a big influence on youth about how exciting and romantic a kiss is. It's like when you see on a show two young teenagers kiss; it's like, 'How romantic! They're in love!'âÖ" said Candace Flinn, a recent graduate of Weber High. "Yet, they're just teenagers; the likelihood of them lasting isn't really likely."

Summer booked?

TX. Correspondent

It's what students look forward to as the school year draws to a close — summer. Summer, with its long days devoid of logarithms and Dickens, usually offers a brief respite from school.

However, this isn’t always the case.

Some teens have to complete a reading assignment for their English classes. While some students must simply set aside enough time at the pool to read their assigned book, others may have to cut back on more time with friends to fill out packets or write essays.
