No-name North Dakota? At least for NCAA tournament

GRAND FORKS, N.D. — This is the time of the year when a Gopher will take on a Terrier, a Greyhound can get beat by an inanimate object like a Buckeye and there are more Lions, Tigers and Wildcats loose than any local zoo would know what to do with.

College hockey approaches a major shakeup

MINNEAPOLIS -- The merry-go-round of major college football teams swapping conferences has left even the most obsessive fans dizzy.

So now imagine Alabama and Auburn leaving the Southeastern Conference to help form a new football league. Then Arkansas, Florida, Georgi

Jack's journey: The mission to make hockey safer

MINNEAPOLIS -- Swishing skates. Clacking sticks. Pucks pinging off the goal pipe. The sound of hockey is unmistakable.

It also can be frightening, as the parents of Jack Jablonski learned last month. The 16-year-old was paralyzed by a check from behind that sent him headfirst into the glass.

For NHL, what to decide on division realignment?

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- The Dallas Stars introduced their new owner last week, and NHL Commissioner Gary Bettman came for the occasion.

The boss wasn't going to get out of town without being grilled about the possibility of the Stars moving to a different division.

"This is only the third time since I landed an hour ago that I've been asked that question," Bettman said at the news conference for Tom Gaglardi's takeover of the team. "The first time I met Tom and talked to him about his acquisition of the Stars, that was one of the first questions he asked me as well."

Yes, realignment is quite the hot topic in the world of pro hockey.

Pack plunders plucky Ponder

MINNEAPOLIS -- Aaron Rodgers had some competition from fearless rookie Christian Ponder. The defending champion Packers still kept their cool.

Rodgers kept Green Bay unbeaten with three touchdowns and 335 yards passing, holding off Ponder in the rookie's first start to defeat the Minnesota Vikings 33-27 on Sunday.

Rodgers completed his first 13 passes and finished 24-for-30, another near-unstoppable afternoon for him. Ponder was picked off twice in the third quarter by Charles Woodson, who almost grabbed a couple more interceptions, but he kept the Vikings in it the whole game after a 71-yard completion on his first play.

Legend of MLB logo: Designer says not Killebrew

MINNEAPOLIS -- Harmon Killebrew, so the story went, was such the slugger that the silhouette of his intimidating pose at the plate was the basis for Major League Baseball's official logo.

There is no question that Killebrew, who died this week at age 74 following a fight with esophageal cancer, was quite the hitter. The Hall of Famer's 573 home runs prove just that.

Hall of Famer Harmon Killebrew dies

MINNEAPOLIS -- Harmon Killebrew, the affable, big-swinging Hall of Famer whose tape-measure home runs made him the cornerstone of the Minnesota Twins and perhaps the most popular player in the team's 51-year history, died Tuesday after battling esophageal cancer. He was 74.

Appeals court backs NFL, lockout remains in place

MINNEAPOLIS -- The NFL has won another round in the court fight with its players.

The 8th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals on Monday decided that the league's lockout of its players should stay in place until a full appeal is heard on whether it is legal, which means until at least the first week of June and possibly much longer.

The 2-1 decision mirrored a similar decision last month from the same panel, including a lengthy dissent from the same judge.

Judge orders end to NFL lockout; league to appeal

ST. PAUL, Minn. -- A federal judge on Monday ordered an end to the NFL lockout, giving the players an early victory in their fight with the owners over how to divide the $9 billion business.

U.S. District Judge Susan Richard Nelson said she was swayed by the players' argument that that the lockout, now in its second month, was causing irreparable harm to their careers.

The plaintiffs "have made a strong showing that allowing the League to continue their 'lockout' is presently inflicting, and will continue to inflict, irreparable harm upon them, particularly when weighed against the lack of any real injury that would be imposed on the NFL by issuing the preliminary injunction," Nelson wrote.

Report: NFL, Favre meet about alleged impropriety

EDEN PRAIRIE, Minn. -- ESPN is reporting that Brett Favre has talked to an NFL security official about text messages and lewd photos he allegedly sent to a New York Jets employee two years ago when he played for the team.

Bettman says NHL franchise situation is stable

CHICAGO -- Gary Bettman sounded a little like a real estate agent in his state-of-the-league address.

Recruiting young hoopsters draws scrutiny

APPLE VALLEY, Minn. -- When Tyus Jones took the floor for his first varsity practice last fall, Tubby Smith was there to watch the budding star -- who happens to be an eighth grader.

(The Associated Press) Julie Chu scrimmages with the U.S. Women's National Hockey team Thursday at the National Sports Center.

Can-do Chu leads positive push for young U.S. women

BLAINE, Minn. -- The Turin Games left the U.S. women's hockey team with a bronze medal and a bitter taste. Who better to lead the push for a better Olympic experience than the relentlessly optimistic Julie Chu?

"She's just always looking out for your best interests, kind of pumping your tires on the bench or off the ice," said defenseman Angela Ruggiero. "We get to the airport and the bags are lost or whatever, and she's the player who's always like, 'Guys, we'll figure it out. It's no big deal.' She kind of just rolls with it."
The disappointment in 2006, marked by a stunning loss to Sweden, was "the bottom of the barrel for USA Hockey" in the words of forward Natalie Darwitz.

(The Associated Press) Goalie Jessie Vetter keeps her eye on the puck during a scrimmage on Thursday.

Vetter than ever: Poise is this goal's strength

BLAINE, Minn. -- Jessie Vetter has established herself as a reliable, unflappable presence where it counts the most in hockey.

The goalie even prefers laid-back music, leading to an unofficial locker room ban of Vetter's iPod from the main dock that pumps techno and rap tunes through the speakers before practices and games to get the adrenaline going.
"No one likes boy bands and country," Vetter said.
The U.S. women's national team truly appreciates her talent, though, and more importantly her poise.

All-you-can-eat seats: Baseball fans pig out

MINNEAPOLIS -- First pitch was still half an hour away and the empty plastic cups, crinkled foil wrappers and peanut shells were already piling up under the blue seats in the Metrodome's upper deck.

While the Minnesota Twins prepared to play the Cleveland Indians on a recent evening, a few hundred fans were getting ready for a night-long contest of their own -- a race to empty out the concession stands before they closed.
"I've done four hot dogs, three nachos, a pretzel, some popcorn and about four of these pops," said Charlie Romain, proudly treating himself to an early 22nd birthday feast. "It's only been an hour, but I'm digesting a bit right now."
