BEVERLY HILLS, Calif. -- Martin Scorsese's Paris adventure "Hugo" leads the Academy Awards with 11 nominations, among them best picture and the latest director honor for the Oscar-winning filmmaker.

Golden Globes get Oscar ball rolling

LOS ANGELES -- Hollywood's first big show on the road to the Academy Awards will help determine if silence is golden this season.

The black-and-white silent film "The Artist" leads contenders for Sunday's Golden Globes with six nominations, among them best musical or comedy, directing and writing honors for Michel Havanavicius and acting slots for Jean Dujardin and Berenice Bejo.

Will Ferrell's 'Billion Dollar Movie' heads to Sundance

LOS ANGELES -- Here's a dream come true for cash-strapped filmmakers: A billion-dollar movie budget.

Next month's Sundance Film Festival, the top showcase for independent cinema, includes the comedy "Tim and Eric's Billion Dollar Movie." It's the story of two filmmakers who get the most colossal budget ever, only to have it all go wrong.

It's hockey night in Canada at Toronto film fest

TORONTO -- It's looking like hockey night in Canada at the Toronto International Film Festival.

One of the country's national sports, hockey is the subject of three films at the prestigious cinema showcase, which opened Thursday and runs through next weekend.

"The Last Gladiators" from Academy Award-winning documentary filmmaker Alex Gibney ("Taxi to the Dark Side") premiered Friday, offering a portrait of punch-throwing hockey enforcers such as former Montreal Canadiens brawler Chris Nilan.

Film legend Elizabeth Taylor dies at 79 in LA

LOS ANGELES — Elizabeth Taylor, the violet-eyed film goddess whose sultry screen persona, stormy personal life and enduring fame and glamour made her one of the last of the classic movie stars and a template for the modern celebrity, died Wednesday at age 79.

She was surrounded by her four children when she died of congestive heart failure at Cedars-Sinai Medical Center, where she had been hospitalized for about six weeks, said publicist Sally Morrison.

“My Mother was an extraordinary woman who lived life to the fullest, with great passion, humor, and love,” her son, Michael Wilding, said in a statement.

“We know, quite simply, that the world is a better place for Mom having lived in it. Her legacy will never fade, her spirit will always be with us, and her love will live forever in our hearts.”

"Wall Street" No. 1 with a $19 million debut

LOS ANGELES -- Movie fans are investing in Michael Douglas and Oliver Stone's "Wall Street: Money Never Sleeps," which opened as the No. 1 weekend movie with $19 million, according to studio estimates Sunday.
