Paper's view 'disgraceful' regarding blimp idea

Blimps, or small unmanned aircraft, that the newspaper and Mayor Caldwell laughed out of existence as "curious" are being used in law enforcement by numerous municipalities around the country (Jan. 10 editorial, "Deflated blimp"). The number is growing rapidly because they are a cost effective solution to help make the police officers safer and by extension, our families. This is a quote from a recent article in the Wall Street Journal on the topic: "Law-enforcement officials say the unmanned aircraft help avoid putting police in the line of fire, either by performing surveillance close to the ground, like a live officer, or by monitoring from high up, removing pilots from potential danger."

Neighbors feel safer with crime center, blimp

Your assertion that The Mayor and The Police Chief are doing too much to fight crime in Ogden is preposterous and destructive to the the future of our city. You are laying the groundwork to encourage and compel the next Mayor to reduce the gains we have made in lowering Ogdens crime rate. The blimp will cost a whole $2,000 per year to run? I could pass the hat an collect that money in one day in Ogden. And if the blimp stops even 1 crime it will save money for Ogden. It would be far more expensive investigating and prosecuting that 1 crime than the entire cost of the Blimp and its operation. The camera center is a no-brainer in terms of being an effective crime fighting idea, but there you go again.

Gangs take away our right to a safe neighborhood

(UNEDITED)People all over the country and in Ogden live behind bars as prisoners in their own homes because a few people in their community decide that being a gang member is a good career choice. The vast majority of inner city residents are denied their basic constitutional rights to "Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness" by a small group of home grown urban terrorists. The gang problem is so bad inSouthern California no amount of money can move you into a neighborhood that does not have a gang problem. If gang member parents are raising their children to live "the life" then perhaps that is an issue DCFS needs to look into. Being a gang member or other criminal is a choice...the vast majority of the people that grow up and live in the same or worse circumstances do not become criminals...most people living in inner cities are good poeple trying to live a good life...they suffer under the oppression inflicted on them by our own home grown version of theTaliban.
