Northridge's Zach Hayes grabs a loose ball as Northridge High School hosts Fremont High School in Layton on Friday. The Knights won 40-33.

Prep basketball: Knights inch closer to Region 1 title

LAYTON -- A shot clock would be the Knights' worst enemy.

With an effective -- some may call it boring -- half-court offense coupled with a tenacious defense, the 'Ridge is challenging for its first league boys basketball title since the 2001-02 season.

Girls basketball: Martin goes off to fuel Titans' victory

SYRACUSE -- For three years running, the Titans have been the flagship of Region 1 girls basketball.

With Oklahoma State assistant coach Bill Annan in attendance, Cowgirls signee Brittney Martin splashed in a season-high 31 points on 13-of-22 shooting Thursday and state 5-A runner-up Syracuse High clinched no less than a tie for its fourth consecutive league title with a 62-50 victory over the Warriors.

Girls basketball: Layton wins with teamwork

LAYTON -- On a team devoid of star power, it is all about defense and teamwork for the once-beaten Lancers.

In its final home game this season, Layton High again got balanced scoring en route to a 55-37 Region 1 victory Tuesday over the Silver Wolves.

"I'm not really emotional. I play every game the same it feels like," said Lancers senior center Courtnee Wood. "I came up as a freshman, so when it started, it seemed like it would be a long four years. But it's just flown by."

Girls basketball: Turnover-prone Lancers still manage rout of Knights

LAYTON -- It was a good thing Ally Wahlstrom was on because the Lancers were a tad off.

Despite an uncharacteristic 23 turnovers, Layton High still smoked the crosstown rival Knights by 21 points Friday in a Region 1 runaway.

"To me, our big rival is Davis. But to Northridge, I think we're their big rival," Wahlstrom said.

Girls basketball: Lakers get ugly win over Griz

WASHINGTON TERRACE -- It was not smooth sailing this week for the league-leading Lakers.

First up was a rocky six-point road win Tuesday over last-place Box Elder. Then Thursday, Bonneville had to regroup after a turnover-plagued, three-point third quarter to subdue the Grizzlies 49-37 and remain undefeated in Region 5.

"I think we had a good first half," Lakers junior guard/forward Emilie Volk said. "We weren't up on our feet like we should have been on defense and they got some 3-pointers. We couldn't miss when we were up there (shooting 49.1 percent in a 65-39 win on Jan. 17). I think we were ready; our shots weren't falling as much."

Prep basketball: Bees have little trouble in shellacking of Roy

BRIGHAM CITY -- Play to your strengths and attack your opponent's weaknesses.

That was the Bees' mindset Wednesday against Roy High, which was again minus the services of 6-foot-8 sophomore Brekkott Chapman -- wearing a walking boot on his left foot -- who is averaging a team-leading 15.00 points per game.

Girls basketball: Williams' outburst leads Titans to romp

SYRACUSE -- After a 50-point first half, would the state 5-A runner-up Titans crack the century mark?

Three-time defending league champion Syracuse High had to settle for matching its season-high point total Tuesday in steam-rolling the Silver Wolves 80-34 in a Region 1 romp.

Girls basketball: Titans rout Lancers in battle of unbeatens

LAYTON -- The "Duel in Davis" was a dandy -- for the state 5-A runner-up Titans.

Despite scoring 14.42 points less than its state-leading 71.42 points per game average, Syracuse High is the state's only undefeated girls basketball team after Friday's 57-41 Region 1 victory over the Lancers played before a sizable crowd.

Prep basketball: Royals no match for Lakers' stingy defense

WASHINGTON TERRACE -- The matchup of the Royals' state 4-A leading offense (56.20 points per game) versus a Bonneville defense allowing just 36.47 ppg -- No. 2 in the 4-A ranks by only .04 -- was a no-contest.

Despite a venue change Thursday, the league-leading Lakers spanked Roy High 54-22 to remain undefeated at Region 5's midpoint.

If Bonneville (13-3 overall, 5-0 league) is to capture its first league girls basketball title since the 2003-04 season, it will have to do it away from home. The Lakers, who swept their seventh consecutive victory and are 8-2 spanning their last 10 games, play four of their final five on the road.

Ben Lomond High’s Malcolm Shipmon (21) dribbles the ball past Bear River’s Kody King in Ogden on Wednesday. The Scots won 49-37.

Prep basketball: Ben Lomond keeps cruising

OGDEN -- Patience has its virtues, which is why the Scots are in contention for their first league boys basketball title since 1986-87, and have already surpassed last season's eight victories.

Running its half-court offense to near perfection Wednesday, while shooting a blistering 65.2 percent (15-of-23) from the floor, paved the way to Ben Lomond's 49-37 Region 11 win over Da Bears.

Girls basketball: Buzzer-beater lifts Lakers to victory

WASHINGTON TERRACE -- It says something when your top two scorers do not crack double digits -- combining for just 11 points, 13 under their season averages -- and you knock off the two-time defending league champion, which had only lost one Region 5 game over the last two seasons.

Still, it took a buzzer-beating 3-pointer from sophomore shooting guard Kayla Eilertson to boost the Lakers past state 4-A runner-up Mountain Crest 48-45.

Weber High’s Kristine Broome looks to pass the ball as Syracuse’s Natasha Monroe defends in Pleasant View on Friday.

Girls basketball: Titans continue to roll

PLEASANT VIEW -- The state 5-A runner-up Titans are hitting their stride, but how do you combat the state's highest-scoring girls basketball team?

Three-time defending Region 1 champion Syracuse High pulverized the Warriors -- outscoring Weber 47-25 in the second half -- to remain undefeated with a decisive 80-52 victory Friday in Richard R. Conolly Gymnasium.

Girls basketball: Lakers win, hold on to share of first place

WASHINGTON TERRACE -- Is this the year the Lakers win their first league girls basketball title since the 2003-04 season?

"It's our goal to win region and we believe we're good enough to win region," Bonneville senior combo forward McKinlee Westmoreland said.

The Lakers, behind 15 combined bench points from Lexie Stratford and Abby Toller, overcame 38.0 percent shooting (19-of-50) Thursday to beat Region 5 runner-up Sky View 55-46 and retain their share of first place.

Girls basketball: Unbeaten Lancers breeze past Wolves

PLAIN CITY -- Being undefeated this deep in the season means you are getting everyone's best game.

It was a four-point ballgame with 3:42 remaining Tuesday before the Lancers closed with a 12-zip run and spanked last-place Fremont 46-30 in the Wolf Den to retain their grip on first place in Region 1.

Gladwell

Prep football: Gladwell returns to Bonneville

WASHINGTON TERRACE -- Who better to be the Lakers new head football coach than a former Bonneville High School quarterback?

After having just one coach for 31 years -- the legendary Thom Budge -- 33-year-old Tyler Gladwell is the third Lakers coach spanning the last three years.

He replaces Randy Johnson, who won the 1992 state 4-A championship at Clearfield with a 27-0 victory over Bonneville, and stepped down after only one season with the Lakers.
