It's time Michigan retired Howard and Woodson's numbers

DETROIT -- Lloyd Carr was elected to the College Football Hall of Fame this week, and now he wants to see a ceremony at Michigan Stadium. Not for him, of course. That's not his style.

"Desmond Howard and Charles Woodson, as winners of the Heisman Trophy, I think they are both deserving of having those jerseys retired," Carr said Wednesday. "I believe that . . . I think it's an issue that is very important to Michigan football."

Foreign players no longer a mystery in NBA draft

DETROIT -- The Pistons likely will use the No. 8 pick in the draft on a very tall man you have never seen. This is, of course, much better than if they chose a very short armadillo you have never seen. But I suspect most fans are wary.

Many fans see the names Enes, Jonas, Bismack, Jan and Donatas, and they think "Darko" Never mind that Bismack, like Darko, is an awesome name, especially for a superhero. This is a different era. The world has changed since the Pistons blew the No. 2 pick in the 2003 draft on Darko Milicic. They will make a much more informed decision this time.

They still could blow it, but the chances of the Pistons blowing their pick by taking a foreign player are about the same as their chances of making a mistake on an American college player.

2 parents arrested after allegedly beating principal, teachers, students

DETROIT -- Two parents were arrested Friday for allegedly beating up several students, teachers and the principal at a Detroit school, a school district official confirmed.

$2M lottery winner keeps collecting food stamps

LANSING, Mich. -- The luck of Leroy Fick, Michigan's 59-year-old "Food Stamp Millionaire" -- a lottery winner on government food assistance -- appeared to be running out this week as state officials worked to get him off the dole.

Representatives of the Michigan Department of Human Services and members of the Legislature said they were moving quickly to revise rules that made it possible for Fick to keep collecting food stamps after he won $2 million in the lottery's televised "Make Me Rich" game in July.

DHS officials confirmed that Fick had contacted them about his winnings and was notified that he could continue to receive aid because he had taken the winnings in a lump sum and still met the income threshold for food assistance.

Romney's next target: health care

WASHINGTON -- Former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney -- who recently formed a presidential exploratory committee -- will return to Michigan on Thursday to address an issue many consider his biggest weakness in next year's race: health care.

Romney, a Republican whose late father George was a Michigan governor, helped write the health care law that extended coverage in Massachusetts. Critics have compared it to the plan enacted by President Barack Obama -- Romney's presumptive opponent if he became the Republican nominee -- and a Democratic-controlled Congress.

Romney is going to deliver a speech Thursday afternoon at the University of Michigan Cardovascular Center in Ann Arbor, where he will "present his place to repeal and replace Obamacare with reforms that lower costs and empower states to craft their own health care solutions," his exploratory committee said in a statement Tuesday.

Affordable asparagus a sure sign of spring

When you start seeing an abundance of asparagus at a decent price in stores, it's a good bet that spring is here. Thick spears from California are common in stores now, and Michigan-grown asparagus will soon follow.

Choose spears that are brilliant green with closed tips that have a purplish tinge. Asparagus is a good source of folic acid, fiber, vitamin C and antioxidants. If you're counting calories, the bonus is that five spears (about 3 1/2 ounces) have 25 calories, no fat and 2 grams of fiber.

Asparagus is usually sold banded together.

Sharks have to use jaws of life to steal W's

SAN JOSE, Calif. -- And on the other side, the Sharks were concerned that they weren't all that concerned.

That was the theme of their morning skate Sunday, which wasn't really a morning skate. It was a team meeting of undisclosed nature. And that was appropriate for this Sharks team, which led the Red Wings, 3-1, at the time in the second round of the Western Conference playoffs. The only urgent matter was the lack of urgency.

The Sharks give you the distinct sense they are not morning people. They have this habit of ... yawn . .. OK, now we'll let center Kyle Wellwood explain it:

U.S. probes allegations of harassment of Muslims at U.S.-Canada border

DETROIT -- The Department of Homeland Security has launched an investigation into whether Muslims are harassed, body searched, and detained by federal agents at the Detroit-Windsor border because of their appearance or religious background.

In a letter sent this week to a local Muslim group, the department's Office of Civil Rights and Civil Liberties said it has received information "concerning repeated handcuffing, brandishing of weapons, prolonged detentions, invasive and humiliating body searches at the border, and inappropriate questioning that pertains to religion and religious practices by" federal agents at the border with U.S. Customs and Border Protection.

Ex-porn star in prostitution ring avoids prison

DETROIT -- After telling the judge she was a changed woman, a former porn star and call girl was spared a prison sentence Friday for her role in a massive prostitution agency that was busted in Detroit last summer.

Nayubet Swaso, also known as Sierra Sanchez in the escort industry, was placed on two-years of supervised release for helping to run Miami Companions, a high-priced escort service that dispatched prostitutes nationwide -- Detroit being among its busiest ports.

Modano could help out as a point man

DETROIT -- The flip side to the Red Wings' talk of being more disciplined in their second-round series is making the Sharks pay when they're not.

The Wings have one power-play goal after two games, scored late in Sunday's 2-1 loss. They finished the game 1-for-6 with the man advantage and are 1-for-8 for the series, which they trail, 2-0. The most egregious waste of a power-play situation came 6 minutes into Game 2. Trailing, 1-0, the Wings had the extra skater for 4 minutes but barely even got set up but once.

NFL situation can affect NBA, too

NBA players are certainly paying close attention to the latest labor developments in the NFL.

U.S. District Judge Susan Richard Nelson made a decision Monday to put a temporary end to the NFL lockout, and some think it also was a major victory for the National Basketball Players Association.

According to the CBSSports.com: "In legitimizing the NFL players' move to dissolve their union in the face of the owners' lockout and granting an injunction to end the lockout pending appeal, Nelson dealt a legal blow to both sports leagues in their efforts to use a lockout as a weapon in collective bargaining."

Delta employees charged in drug smuggling schemes

DETROIT -- Twelve people were charged Thursday in two separate drug smuggling schemes involving baggage handlers at Detroit Metro Airport who allegedly helped sneak in suitcases filled with marijuana and cocaine from Jamaica and Houston.

Wherever Red Wings need him, Drew Miller is there

DETROIT -- Valtteri Filppula calls him the silver fox, while Niklas Kronwall figures he can't really say anything. But by any description, the Red Wings agree forward Drew Miller is exactly the sort of depth player a team needs to succeed this time of year.

Miller's speed makes him a fit on any line, and his pursuit of the puck makes it easier on whoever his linemates are.

Red Wings are deeper and stronger with return of Henrik Zetterberg

DETROIT -- Pavel Datsyuk sees a change in Red Wings teammate Henrik Zetterberg, one he isn't sure he's keen on.

"I don't know if he completely back, because he too much shooting," Datsyuk said, smiling. "I don't know why. Usually he doesn't too much shoot. Now he too much shoots."

Employees pose with face masks of Britain’s Prince William and his fiancee Kate Middleton as they pack the masks for shipping at a production plant in Southam, central England on Friday. More than 120,000 of the masks have been sold worldwide with Mask-arade company staff working around the clock to complete orders before the Royal Wedding. Britain’s Prince William will marry Kate Middleton in London’s Westminster Abbey this Friday.

Turn on the telly for royal bliss

If you think you can't find a network carrying the royal wedding on Friday, here's the first thing to ask: Have you turned on your TV?

Coverage of the event will air on ABC, NBC and CBS as well as cable-news channels CNN, Fox News and MSNBC. Most of those networks are starting their pre game shows, so to speak, at 2 a.m.
