16 dead as plane attempts emergency landing in Brazil

RECIFE, Brazil -- The crew of two and all 14 passengers aboard a light aircraft in Brazil were killed Wednesday when it attempted an emergency landing near a beach.

The twin-engine plane belonging to Noar Linhas airline had just taken off from Recife airport in the northeast of the country on a flight to Natal when the pilot radioed the control tower to report an emergency and announce he would attempt to land on the beach.

The L-410 Turbolet went up in flames as it attempted to land on an area of open land behind the beach, with witnesses reporting an explosion.

ISTANBUL -- Two people died and more than 100 were injured after a 5.9-magnitude earthquake hit western Turkey, authorities said Friday.

Queen concludes landmark visit to Ireland

CORK, Ireland -- Britain's Queen Elizabeth II concluded her historic visit to Ireland -- the first by a British monarch to the Republic -- with a visit to the southern city of Cork Friday.

Thousands lined the streets of Cork to greet the queen, whose visit has been almost universally praised for its gestures of reconciliation.

The inquiry began after a fire bomb was thrown early in the day at an Islamic cultural center in Berlin, sending a sheet of flame up the facade. German police said "information" was found at the scene suggesting there had been more than 10 serial attacks.
