U.S. Transportation Command officials encourage service members to take advantage of new systems to make it easier.

New systems make military moves much more efficient

WASHINGTON -- With the busiest season for permanent-change-of-station moves under way, officials at the U.S. Transportation Command are encouraging service members to take advantage of new systems designed to make the process more convenient and efficient.

Transcom launched the new Personally Procured Move, or PPM, system to better compensate service members who personally move their household goods on military orders, said Dolly Davidson, a change management outreach specialist at Transcom.

PPM replaced the old "Do-It-Yourself," or DITY, move system.

Gates orders additional ship, eyes more capability for Haiti

NEW DELHI -- Just hours before another earthquake hit Haiti early this morning, Defense Secretary Robert M. Gates said the Defense Department is sending a port-clearing ship and evaluating additional capabilities to assist the disaster relief effort.

Secretary Gates announced that he signed deployment orders this morning to send a port-clearing ship equipped with cranes to get the port operating within a week or two to speed up aid distribution.

Stop-loss payments continue, but some no longer eligible

WASHINGTON -- The fiscal 2010 defense budget extends payments to service members involuntarily extended on active duty under the so-called "Stop Loss" program, but those who received a bonus for voluntarily re-enlisting or extending their service no longer qualify for retroactive stop-loss pay.

Defense Department officials put the new policy into effect Jan. 5, modifying eligibility for retroactive special pay to comply with Section 8108 of the 2010 Defense Department Appropriations Act, which took effect Dec.
