Supreme Court mutes the speech of those without money

Contributed, E. Kent Winward

It is official. Free speech isn't cheap. The Supreme Court ruled this week that it will "not penalize an individual for 'robustly exercis[ing]' his First Amendment rights." (The sexist language belongs to the all-male majority opinion; I'm just quoting here, so don't shoot the messenger.)  In the case of McCutcheon v. FEC, the Supreme Court...

Cue ominous music, but check your facts on the ACA

Last week I went into the pharmacy to pick up a prescription. Besides being convenient, my pharmacy has a frequent drug buyer card that when it is filled up they give me a $25 gift card of my choice. I usually choose a gift card for Amazon or Barnes and Noble because as my wife would tell you: a) I love books and b) I have cheapskate tendencies....

Well, another legislative session has ended. And with 486 passed bills, Utah is still safe for bad air and pay day lenders.During the session, the Utah State Bar holds an annual continuing legal education class for attorneys called "Utah State Bar Day at the Legislature."  I attended last year and this year the other attorney in my office...

Sometimes you need license to follow the rules

Mar 14 2014 - 2:02pm

I walked into the Federal Building this last Thursday for some hearings.  As I attempted to make my way through security, I began what has become a near weekly ritual.First, while dressing in the morning I leave my belt at home. The metal on the belt sets off the metal detector, so I simply don't wear the belt.  (In extreme advanced...

Arizona lawmakers failed to understand concept of 'religious freedom'

E. Kent Winward, Standard-Examiner contributor
Mar 10 2014 - 8:24am

I have watched with some interest in the Arizona attempts to pass a "religious freedom" law that ended this week with Governor Brewer's veto.  The law was a convoluted attempt to allow businesses to discriminate on the basis of religious beliefs.  Business leaders in Arizona rallied against the law and the impression that Arizona...

Mar 9 2014 - 12:16pm

The worth of a vote is great in the eyes of a politician. But how much is your vote worth? In 2014, we are facing another election season. This week, the Count My Vote movement reached a settlement with the Utah State Legislature to propose legislation that would change the Utah electoral process. Without fail, during the news conference announcing...

Earthworms, caffeine, and Utah laws and regulations

Contributed, E. Kent Winward
Feb 14 2014 - 2:53pm

My son is starting his science fair project for this spring. Numerous debates ensued in the household over what would be a great science fair project. Since he is 11, I mentioned a sadistic science fair project where earthworms are trained to avoid an electric rod that provides a mild shock. Then the earthworms are severed and when they grow into...

False concept of Internet privacy misses the point

On Jan. 20, 2014, a group of Ukrainian protesters received an ominous text during the demonstration they were involved in. The cellphones of all of the participants received a text reading: 'Dear subscriber, you are registered as a participant in a mass riot.' Most people's immediate reaction is one of revulsion, a conjuring of Orwell's Big...
