MIAMI - Last weekend's horror-movie episode on the MacArthur Causeway in Miami brought together two troubled men, one who was struggling to get his life on track, another who had given up trying.

Rudy Eugene, 31, had been seeking spiritual guidance in Scripture. On May 24, two days before he would viciously attack a homeless man named Ronald Edward Poppo, Eugene attended a Bible-study session at a friend's North Miami Beach home.

Starving horses rescued from site known as animal dumping ground

MIAMI -- On Sunday, 11 horses found starving in a Southwest Miami-Dade field got a new chance at life when rescuers saved them.

Ten of the horses -- now munching on clean hay in stalls at a Hialeah-area ranch -- will get new names on Tuesday.

MIAMI — Patricia Stephens Due, a lifelong Florida civil rights crusader who led 1960s-era demonstrations and voter-registration drives, went to jail for trying to integrate a lunch counter, and suffered permanent eye damage from a police assault, died Tuesday. She was 72.
