Florida leads US in shark attacks

ORLANDO, Fla. -- Even though it had fewer shark bites reported in 2011 than any year since 2004, Volusia County, Fla., continues to be saddled with the nickname of shark-bite capital of the world.

Arsonist burns world's oldest cypress tree

LONGWOOD, Fla. -- An early morning fire -- suspected to be the work of an arsonist -- on Monday destroyed one of the world's oldest cypress trees and a Seminole County landmark that sprouted some 3,400 years before there was a Seminole County.

More pilots being blinded by lasers

ORLANDO, Fla. -- There's a laser light show taking place in the skies over America. It's cheap. It's easy. But most of all, authorities say, it's dangerous.

That's because those laser beams are being aimed at planes and helicopters in record numbers.

Instructor, student presumed dead after plane crash in Fla.

NEW SMYRNA BEACH, Fla. -- A flight instructor and his student are presumed dead in the wreckage of a small plane in the Atlantic Ocean, but searches have yet to locate their bodies, an official with the National Transportation Safety Board said Thursday afternoon.

Divers have found what they believe to be pieces of the wreckage of the plane that crashed Wednesday evening, but the parts have not been identified, said Butch Wilson, an NTSB air safety investigator.

Radar is being used to search for the plane's wreckage as searchers concentrate their efforts on recovering the bodies, Wilson said.

Louisiana convict confesses to 1993 spring break murder

ORLANDO, Fla. -- More than 17 years after the body of a 20-year-old spring breaker was dumped along a roadway in Volusia County, Fla., a convict in Louisiana has claimed responsibility for her death.
