Mustangs dump Moose, clinch playoff spot

OGDEN -- A 3-1 win over the visiting Park City Junior Moose was all it took for the Mustangs to lasso a seat in the Western States Hockey League postseason after a roller coaster inaugural season.

With six regular season games left Ogden's junior hockey team now has piece of mind that those won't be their last.

"The boys deserve it and they've earned it," Coach Joe Pfleegor said. "Not only did the boys fight hard to get to this point but if you look at the owners and what they've done for Ogden, it's incredible."

Prep basketball: Scots top Tigers for second in Region 11

OGDEN -- Junior guard Sterling Brandley scored a game-high 16 points and three Scots hit double-digit scoring to lift Ben Lomond 62-50 over Ogden at Phil Russell court on Wednesday.

The win solidifies Ben Lomond as Region 11's second place team at 9-2 just behind the undefeated Morgan Trojans (11-0).

Girls basketball: Falcons hold out tourney hopes

CLEARFIELD -- Led by senior guard Mikenzey Wiberg's game-high 18 points, the Falcons picked up their third Region 6 win and kept their state tournament hopes alive with a 51-38 win over visiting Highland High on Tuesday night.

Wiberg helped Clearfield take a 24-21 lead at the half and the Falcons never looked back, keeping the Rams at bay with an 18-of-26 performance from the charity stripe.

"We shot very well on the line tonight," Clearfield coach Rebecca Packer said. "That was probably the biggest thing we did well. It was huge."

Gentle Jayhawk wins national honor

OGDEN -- Each year the National Federation of State High School Associations names a single coach as girls soccer National Coach of the Year.

For 2011, that coach was St. Joseph Catholic High School's own Alexis (Alex) Salvo.

"I really don't want to make this award about me," Salvo said. "I really feel this award belongs to the whole school."

Mustangs hit road block in playoff quest

OGDEN -- Ogden had an opportunity to clinch a division playoff spot and make up ground on thid-place Cheyenne with a win over the second-place Boulder Bison during their three-game series at the Weber County Ice Sheet.

Boulder had other plans as their quest to catch first place Idaho got a boost with a 12-5, 6-3, and 6-3 sweep of the Mustangs over the weekend.

Communities That Care to release assessment findings for youth community

WASHINGTON TERRACE -- When nearly a dozen Bonneville High School students were arrested in mid- November in a raid by the Weber-Morgan Narcotics Strike Force, it confirmed to Amy Mikkelsen that the youth community needed help.

Mustangs sweep Snipers in weekend series

OGDEN -- Break out the brooms 'cause the Mustangs are cleaning up.

Ogden picked up their fifth-straight win and swept the Dallas Snipers over the weekend with 5-3, 8-4 and 4-3 decisions.

With 10 games left in the season the wins put the Mustangs well ahead of last place Park City in the division chase and provides a full head of steam as Ogden looks to postseason play.

Women's basketball: Wildcats fall short after rally against Idaho State

OGDEN -- Ouch.

After obliterating an 18-point deficit to take a three-point lead with 53 seconds left the Weber State women's basketball team was poised for their first Big Sky win over conference-leading Idaho State on Saturday afternoon.

Then disaster struck.

Women's basketball: Wildcats fall to Hornets

OGDEN -- Despite a pair of double-doubles and four players with double-digit scores, the Weber State women's basketball team fell 83-68 to Sacramento State at the Dee Events Center on Thursday night.

Sacramento State's offense overpowered the 'Cats, shooting 44.8 percent from the floor and netting 26 points in the paint.

"We've got to be disciplined on defense," WSU coach Bethann Ord said. "Defense is what wins games and we've got to do a better job of it."

Girls basketball: Jayhawks rout Eagles, sit atop region

OGDEN -- St. Joseph sophomore center Elizabeth Tomon notched 16 points and 10 rebounds as the Jayhawks cruised to a 57-36 win over Layton Christian Academy, taking sole possession of Region 17's top spot on Tuesday night.

Tomon's double-double at Father Neale Herrlich Gymnasium was complimented by 28 combined points from senior guards Katie Berry and Katie Panushka.

Prep basketball: Trojans pick up key road victory

OGDEN -- Morgan senior forward Boston Saunders scored 23 points and hauled in five rebounds keeping the Trojans undefeated in Region 11 with a 71-64 road win over Ogden on Friday.

Three Trojans hit double-digit scores as Morgan moves to 6-0 in region play.

OGDEN -- The Tigers erased a 13-point deficit to pick up their fourth Region 11 victory with a 63-42 win over visiting Grantsville at Phil Russell Court on Wednesday.

Ogden battled back from a four-point first quarter led by Junior guard Spencer Smith's game-high 20 points and five rebounds.

Prep basketball: Warriors ride Schenck to beat Darts

PLEASANT VIEW -- The Warriors trailed until the fourth quarter when junior guard Hayden Schenk sparked Weber's offense and led his team to a 64-58 win over Region 1 powerhouse Davis Tuesday night.

Schenk scored a game-high 27 as Richard R. Conolly gymnasium exploded when he scored the go-ahead bucket with 4:57 left to play.

Derby fundraiser smash hit

OGDEN -- When Johnny Gullo put out the word this week he wanted to hold a demolition derby on Saturday to benefit police officers involved in the Jan. 4 shooting, he was hoping to get at least 10 drivers for a modest fundraiser.

Prep basketball: Scots rise above Tigers at home

OGDEN -- Ben Lomond High forwards Sterling Brandley and Josh Hardin combined for 24 points and hauled in 13 rebounds as the Scots buried Ogden 45-37 in front of an earth-shaking crowd in Friday night's Region 11 boys basketball action.

The decibels hit nearly unbearable in Ben Lomond's gym as Brandley hit his only free throw of the night, icing the game just seconds before the buzzer.
