Prep basketball: Tigers oust Bears in triple-overtime thriller

OGDEN — It took three overtimes to reach a decision between Ogden and Bear River at Phil Russell court on Friday night.

When the dust finally settled it was the Tigers logging an electrifying 70-61 Region 11 win that sent the student body scrambling onto the floor as the final buzzer sounded.

Local student shines at national Punt, Pass, Kick competition

For five years, Bear River High School freshman Bridger Beus has competed in the National Football League’s Punt, Pass and Kick competition.

Last Saturday, he lived out his dream in Atlanta as one-of-four finalists competing for the national title.

OGDEN — On Thursday, Dec. 13, Goody Tyler IV stood at water’s edge of the Salt Lake Marina, stripped down to a Speedo, cap and goggles, waded into the 41-degree water and started swimming.

OGDEN — A 16-9 third quarter helped lift Morgan over Ogden as the Trojans escaped Phil Russell Court with a 64-47 win on Wednesday night to open Region 11 action.

Mustangs pick up much-needed WSHL victory

OGDEN – In just his second start of the season Ogden goalie Colby Atkinson stonewalled the Moose as the Mustangs shutout Salt Lake City 5-0 at The Ice Sheet on Friday night in WSHL play.

While Atkinson’s last minutes were on Sept. 23, he managed to turn away all nine Salt Lake shots behind a tenacious defense that helped the Mustangs to their first win since Nov. 30.

At Christmas show in Ogden, Layton siblings to give preview of nationals routine

OGDEN — At first glance, Amalia and Mitchell Friess look like the average brother and sister; however, once they step onto the ice, their skill far exceeds their age.

Years of hard work have paid off for the siblings from Layton — they are on their way to Omaha, Neb., for the United States Figure Skating Association National Championships, to be held Jan. 19-27.

Wasatch Figure Skating Club President Betty Winters said local community members and figure skating fans can catch a glimpse of these possible future Olympians on Saturday, when Mitchell, 15, and Amalia, 12, showcase the routines they’ll take to nationals at the club’s 2012 Christmas Show at The Ice Sheet in Ogden.

Harrisville teen revs past competition in international moto race

Josh Knight is making an impact on the international motorcycle-racing scene, and the 17-year-old recently brought home a silver medal as the youngest member of Team USA at the International Six Day Enduro in Saxony, Germany.

“My mom always had a philosophy growing up about never deterring your kids from following their dreams,” said Josh’s mom, Jennie Knight. “To try and build them up the best you can because the world … will beat them down on its own. I think Josh has done well with following it. This has definitely been a dream that he had, and he was able to accomplish that.”

Mustangs swept by Junior Steelheads in weekend series

Idaho outscored the Mustangs 18-7 as Ogden dropped a three-game set to the league-leading Junior Steelheads 4-6, 2-7, and 1-5 in Boise over the weekend.

Idaho forward Dominik Gabaj logging six goals and nine points as Steelhead goalie Blake Mendenhall picked up three wins.

WASHINGTON TERRACE — It took overtime between Fremont and Bonneville to crown a champion of the 25th annual Harry Burchell Classic at Bonneville High School on Saturday afternoon.

Prep basketball: Cyprus bench shoots down Falcons

OGDEN — A 30-point effort from the Cyprus bench was too much for Ogden to handle as the Pirates handed the Tigers a 68-58 loss at Phil Russell Court on Friday night.

Cyprus guard Marcus Quig tallied a team-high 22 points from the bench (including five 3-pointers) and anchored a speedy Pirate offense that had three players log double-digit scores and amassed a 36-22 lead at the half.

OGDEN — Despite a game-high 20 points from Ogden point guard Morgan Jones, the Logan Grizzlies escaped Phil Russell Court with a 58-49 win on Thursday night.

Mustangs experience highs and lows in weekend split with Moose

OGDEN — It was a roller coaster weekend for the Mustangs as they split a two-game set with the visiting Salt Lake Moose 4-0, 6-5 at the Weber County Ice Sheet Friday and Saturday night.

Sean Haltam and Dusty Watt nabbed three points apiece for Ogden with a goal and pair of assists each as the Mustangs lead the in-state rivalry with a 4-1-1 record against the Moose.
