Two boys fishing with Minnesota sturgeon 'ambassador' catch biggest fish of their lives

BAUDETTE, Minn. -- Grant Slukynsky is playing a sturgeon now, and judging by the bend in his pole, the fish is giving the 9-year-old everything he can handle.

We've been fishing less than 10 minutes.

Compared to this, scoring goals might be a walk in the park for the third-grader from Warroad, Minn., a boy of few words. It takes a bit of prodding, but Slukynsky admits he tickled the twine 19 times in five games during a recent hockey tournament in the Twin Cities.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- There's been a national focus in recent years to recruit new adult hunters, and the effort seems to be paying off.

The U.S. Sportsmen's Alliance sent out a news release highlighting that success recently, and it's a story worth sharing.

It all started in 2004, when the Alliance, along with the National Wild Turkey Federation and the National Shooting Sports Foundation, launched a program called Families Afield.

GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- Whether it's seriously shopping or just adding items to that ever-growing "buy it someday" list, few things are more fun for the outdoors enthusiast than browsing through the sporting goods stores and catalogs.

Good thing, too, because Christmas is just around the corner.

During the course of the year, we receive hundreds of press releases from companies marketing all sorts of outdoorsy gadgets and gizmos. Some get filed accordingly, but others catch our attention and are horded away for future reference.

Many of those are included here, and best as we can tell, would look great under the tree of just about any outdoors lover. We've added others to the list based on our own experience.

The end result is this year's version of the Holiday Outdoor Gift Guide. Check it out, and if something catches your attention, there's plenty of time to start dropping subtle hints.

Minnesota's Dave Genz is ice fishing's pied piper

GRAND FORKS, N.D. -- Dave Genz, inventor of the Fish Trap portable ice fishing shelter, is widely known as the "Father of Modern Ice Fishing." He is an innovator who helped carry ice fishing from the days of sitting on a bucket and hoping for the best to an approach that relies heavily on mobility and electronics -- in Genz's case, the Vexilar flasher unit -- to see what's happening below the ice and trigger more fish into striking.

These days, Genz, who turned 63 on Saturday, travels the "ice belt" promoting the sport of ice fishing and the products that have helped make the winter pastime more enjoyable. He's a member of the pro staffs at Clam Corp., which markets the Fish Trap and other ice fishing shelters, and Vexilar. He also is a member of the Minnesota Fishing Hall of Fame.
