Lakers back Brown after Magic's prediction

LOS ANGELES (AP) -- The Lakers issued a statement publicly backing Mike Brown on Saturday after Magic Johnson declared the first-year head coach would be fired if Los Angeles lost Game 7 of its first-round playoff series with Denver.

The club issued its statement a few hours before the third-seeded Lakers hosted the Nuggets in the series finale.

Kasey Kahne confident he'll turn around his season

FONTANA, Calif. -- Kasey Kahne waited nearly two years between signing with NASCAR's winningest team and finally climbing into his new ride.

So far, the wait was hardly worth it.

Kahne opened the season with a month of wrecks, mistakes and disappointing results for Hendrick Motorsports, culminating in a collision with Regan Smith that ruined last week at Bristol. He's 32nd in the Sprint Cup Series points standings, and his car is down to 34th in owner points, theoretically putting Kahne in position to lose a guaranteed spot in the field if he has another wreck or awful performance Sunday at Auto Club Speedway.

Jazz stun Lakers in Los Angeles

LOS ANGELES — The Utah Jazz went several years between road victories over the Los Angeles Lakers until winning twice in their last three trips. Paul Millsap deflected the praise for Utah’s latest stunner onto two surprising rookies, and the Jazz gave the credit right back to the power forward who knows how to beat L.A.

Millsap scored 24 points, rookie Enes Kanter added a career-high 17 points and eight rebounds, and the Jazz handed the Lakers just their second home loss since Christmas, 103-99 on Sunday night.

Rookie Alec Burks scored 13 of his career-high 17 points in the fourth quarter for the Jazz, who snapped the Lakers’ five-game winning streak while winning three straight games of their own for the first time in two months. They even forced an awful performance from NBA scoring leader Kobe Bryant, who missed 17 of his 20 shots.

Ducks G Hiller plays every game for 2 months

ANAHEIM, Calif. -- Jonas Hiller watched the Anaheim Ducks' playoff chase from the stands instead of the crease last spring, sidelined by a mystery ailment that put his NHL career in doubt.

"It isn't very fun not to be on the ice," he said. "I hate it."

Real Salt Lake ruins Galaxy's title celebration

CARSON, Calif. -- Javier Morales scored the go-ahead goal in the 80th minute, Fabian Espindola added another late score, and Real Salt Lake spoiled the defending MLS champion Los Angeles Galaxy's season opener with a 3-1 victory Saturday night.

UCLA fires Rick Neuheisel; will coach Pac-12 title

LOS ANGELES -- UCLA fired coach Rick Neuheisel on Monday after four disappointing seasons in charge of his alma mater.

Neuheisel will be allowed to coach the Bruins (6-6, 5-4 Pac-12) in Friday's Pac-12 title game at Oregon, athletic director Dan Guerrero announced. Offensive coordinator Mike Johnson will be the Bruins' interim coach if they receive a bowl berth.

Neuheisel is 21-28 since taking over the program in December 2007, never building the momentum he needed to reach his goal of challenging Southern California for city supremacy. Guerrero fired Neuheisel two days after UCLA's 50-0 loss to No. 9 USC, the Bruins' largest loss since 1930 in their crosstown rivalry game.

"I thanked Dan for the opportunity," Neuheisel said on the Pac-12's promotional teleconference for the title game, less than an hour after his firing was announced. "I don't need reasons and all that kind of stuff. Certainly when you're the UCLA coach, you'd like to play better against USC. I know that. We had our chances, but when you lose in the fashion we did, that's a difficult pill to swallow."

Donovan, Beckham lead LA Galaxy to MLS title

CARSON, Calif. -- Landon Donovan scored in the 72nd minute on passes from Robbie Keane and David Beckham, and the Los Angeles Galaxy's three superstars won their first MLS Cup together with a 1-0 victory over the Houston Dynamo on Sunday night.

Beckham won his first MLS championship in the final game of his groundbreaking five-year contract with the Galaxy, who rolled through the postseason to the franchise's third league title after finishing with MLS' best regular-season record.

Beckham punctuated a solid performance in the MLS Cup with an alert header to Keane, the Irish striker who joined Los Angeles in midseason. Keane made a run and eventually fed Donovan, who struck home his record 20th MLS playoff goal.

MLS commish Garber praises Beckham's tenure

LOS ANGELES -- Commissioner Don Garber thought he knew what Major League Soccer was getting into when the Los Angeles Galaxy signed David Beckham more than four years ago. Garber now realizes he had no idea what the Beckham Experience would mean for his fledgling league.

A few days before Beckham plays for his first MLS title in the final days of his Galaxy contract, Garber says the league doesn't regret inviting the English superstar to become the face of MLS in 2007.

"I underestimated the power of his celebrity by a long shot," Garber said in an interview with The Associated Press. "I think we underestimated the challenge of (Beckham) playing for England, and we didn't expect his desire to go out on loan (to AC Milan). But I also totally underestimated how hardworking and tough he is. He will play through injury and fatigue. That warrior-like mentality was like nobody expected in MLS. This guy wants to win, and he'll do anything. He's been great for our league and for our game."

UCLA tries to extend its stay atop Pac-12 South

LOS ANGELES -- Nelson Rosario only has to look across UCLA's practice fields to Pauley Pavilion to be reminded how the Bruins should handle their unlikely lead in the Pac-12 South.

The venerated on-campus basketball arena is undergoing a major expansion, with scaffolding and new walls rising around it almost every day this fall while the Bruins practiced a few feet away.

"We're still fighting like we're underdogs," said Rosario, UCLA's leading receiver with 40 catches. "We're still out here with a construction worker's mindset, that we're still building something. We know it can flip just like that, so we're still out here working hard."

MMA promotion Bellator inks global TV deal

LOS ANGELES -- While the UFC makes its network television debut on Fox this week, a smaller mixed martial arts promotion is also getting millions of new viewers.

Bellator Fighting Championships has agreed to a five-year deal with FremantleMedia Enterprises to sell its MMA programming around the world, adding a global reach to its domestic niche on networks owned by Viacom, which also owns a majority stake in the promotion.

Galaxy wins West final, sends RSL home for season

CARSON, Calif. -- Mike Magee scored the go-ahead goal on a pass from David Beckham in the 58th minute, and Landon Donovan and Robbie Keane also scored as the Los Angeles Galaxy advanced to the MLS Cup with a 3-1 victory over Real Salt Lake on Sunday night in the Western Conference final.

With spectacular plays from their trio of superstars, Los Angeles advanced to face the Houston Dynamo in the MLS title game Nov. 20 at Home Depot Center, where the Supporters' Shield-winning Galaxy haven't lost all year.

Manny Pacquiao sings on "Jimmy Kimmel Live"

LOS ANGELES -- Manny Pacquiao is taking a beating in the center of this ring. He barely knows a word of this Bee Gees song, which is a bit too high and complicated for his singing skills, and he's struggling to read the lyrics off the cue cards -- probably because he's wearing sunglasses in a dark studio.

Nobody at Thursday's rehearsal for "Jimmy Kimmel Live" is even slightly worried. The pure absurdity of boxing's pound-for-pound champion earnestly singing "How Deep Is Your Love" is great television, which is what the ABC talk show gets every time Pacquiao visits.
