Greg Cote: Panthers' Theodore able to block it all out

SUNRISE, Fla. -- The Florida Panthers' Jose Theodore isn't the most accomplished goaltender in this first-round playoff series against New Jersey. He hasn't always even been clearly the best goalie on his own team. He arrived here, before this NHL season, considered at age 35 to be well past his best days and fading.

Look out Dan Marino and 1972 Dolphins

The NFL season nearing its midpoint plays out in a macabre context from a Miami vantage, with so much attention fixated on "achieving" the worst record -- perhaps even 0-16? -- and salvaging from a sunken season the loot of a No. 1 overall draft pick and Stanford quarterback Andrew Luck.

It is time, though, to pay heed to two other subplots of a more historical interest to the Dolphins and Dolfans: the Packers' possibility of equaling Miami's long-unmatched 1972 Perfect Season and what looks like a full frontal assault on Dan Marino's enduring 1984 record of 5,084 passing yards.

Dolphins coach Tony Sparano firmly on the hottest seat

MIAMI -- This might be the most important coaching week of Tony Sparano's life. His Dolphins future is wavering and could depend on Miami winning during this commencing three-game road trip -- with Sunday's game at Cleveland presenting itself as the most likely victory of the three by a lot.

Sparano won't survive coming home 0-5, which will loom as a real possibility without a win this Sunday.

This I believe, but it is a bit more than just a sense or gut feeling.

Midseason awards for the NFL

It's roughly halftime of the NFL regular season and so it wouldn't make much sense to delay our King Sport Midseason Awards:

A look at NFL teams with the best quarterback situations

Peyton Manning vs. Kurt Warner this week marks a first. Never before has there been a duel of NFL quarterbacks who have been multiple league MVP winners and Super Bowl MVPs. That's our launch-point to rank teams based on overall quarterbacking. We factor in the starter's current performance level, age, injury history, and who his backups are.

Ranking the NFL teams, 1 through 32

Time for Miami Herald columnist Greg Cote to rank the NFL's 32 teams (in order to annoy fans of 31 of them), and your Dolphins would be much higher on the list if it were based solely on the motivation derived from being overlooked, disrespected and all of those other things athletes take as personal insults and use as fuel. Think about it. Miami is the defending AFC East champion but enters the new season quietly as a division afterthought, overshadowed nationally by the return of the mighty Tom Brady in New England, by the noisy landing of Terrell Owens in Buffalo and by the red-carpet arrival of Mark Sanchez in New York. The poor Dolphins are consigned a Las Vegas betting line over/under of eight victories, meaning the forecast is a team cascading from an 11-5 playoff season to a spot on the couch come the postseason, TV remote in hand. Is the outlook unjustifiably dire? Let's take a few months to answer that. For now, one man's pecking order for NFL '09:
