Wings on brink of NHL history

DETROIT -- Players vaguely know the last time they lost at Joe Louis Arena dates back months and months; what's vivid is where they find themselves at the present: topping the NHL, but barely.

The Red Wings have the chance Tuesday night, when they play host to Dallas, to enter the record books with their 21st straight victory at home, chatter about shoot-outs and overtime be damned. It's an accomplishment made possible through a combination of hard work, attention to detail, reliance on depth, and, as defenseman Brad Stuart pointed out Monday, "a little bit of luck."

Red Wings think Brendan Smith's skills need a little seasoning

DETROIT -- There's no question Brendan Smith is going to be with the Red Wings; the only unknown is when. Even at 22, he is a very gifted defenseman, future top-four material.

Three former Red Wings confirmed dead in fiery Russian plane crash

Three Detroit former Red Wings were killed Wednesday morning in a plane crash in Russia.

Former assistant Brad McCrimmon, former defenseman Ruslan Salei and former goaltending prospect Stefan Liv perished when their Yak-42 plane crashed shortly after takeoff from Yaroslavl, about 150 miles northeast of Moscow.

Modano could help out as a point man

DETROIT -- The flip side to the Red Wings' talk of being more disciplined in their second-round series is making the Sharks pay when they're not.

The Wings have one power-play goal after two games, scored late in Sunday's 2-1 loss. They finished the game 1-for-6 with the man advantage and are 1-for-8 for the series, which they trail, 2-0. The most egregious waste of a power-play situation came 6 minutes into Game 2. Trailing, 1-0, the Wings had the extra skater for 4 minutes but barely even got set up but once.

Wherever Red Wings need him, Drew Miller is there

DETROIT -- Valtteri Filppula calls him the silver fox, while Niklas Kronwall figures he can't really say anything. But by any description, the Red Wings agree forward Drew Miller is exactly the sort of depth player a team needs to succeed this time of year.

Miller's speed makes him a fit on any line, and his pursuit of the puck makes it easier on whoever his linemates are.

Red Wings are deeper and stronger with return of Henrik Zetterberg

DETROIT -- Pavel Datsyuk sees a change in Red Wings teammate Henrik Zetterberg, one he isn't sure he's keen on.

"I don't know if he completely back, because he too much shooting," Datsyuk said, smiling. "I don't know why. Usually he doesn't too much shoot. Now he too much shoots."

Red Wings' Holmstrom was Scotty Bowman's crease creation

GLENDALE, Ariz. -- It's close to a toss-up what his Detroit Red Wings teammates like best about Tomas Holmstrom: That he is as hard-nosed and relentless as they come, or that he can't really pronounce the letter "j."

The latter is just one of the many quirks that make Holmstrom who he is. He has been with the Wings 14 seasons, since he came over as a rookie in 1996, and yet he still sounds like he stepped off the boat from Sweden yesterday.

Goal drought dogs Red Wings' top scorers

ST. LOUIS -- Pavel Datsyuk scored for the second straight game to give the Red Wings a much-needed victory Saturday, but several other high-profile players remain mired in droughts.

Datsyuk netted the winning goal in the 5-3 victory over the Blues, one night after scoring in overtime at home against Edmonton. A pair of fourth liners, Darren Helm and Justin Abdelkader, also scored on the Blues, as did defensemen Niklas Kronwall and Ruslan Salei.

Meanwhile, Henrik Zetterberg has just two goals over his last 26 games; Johan Franzen has one in his past 18. Valtteri Filppula has two goals in his last 15 games, and Todd Bertuzzi had gone 11 straight without scoring.

Osgood expects to start for Red Wings soon

Goaltender Chris Osgood is certain he'll be back playing soon, which is just what the Detroit Red Wings have been waiting to hear.

Osgood's availability was in doubt as recently as last week, as he was dealing with the aftermath of Jan. 11 surgery.

"I feel better now, like, health-wise and strength-wise, than I did previous to the injury," Osgood said Tuesday morning. "There's no doubt I'll be back, it's just a matter of when."

Former teammates not surprised by Yzerman's success

TAMPA, Fla. -- Knowing Steve Yzerman like they do, his success as general manager of the Tampa Bay Lightning is exactly what his former teammates expected.

The Red Wings play their one and only game of the season Thursday night against Yzerman's new team, which sits in second place in the Eastern Conference.

Red Wings carry many 2010 positives into 2011

DETROIT -- As the Red Wings prepared to close out 2010, several positives shine brightly into the New Year.

Entering Thursday night, the Red Wings lead the Western Conference with 52 points and lead the NHL with a 3.46 goals-per-game average, the latter a reflection of their forwards and their defensemen.

Led by Nicklas Lidstrom's 11 goals, the Detroit blue line corps is the NHL's top offensive contributor. The Wings are the only team with three players among the top 20 in scoring for defensemen, with Lidstrom at 35 points, Brian Rafalski at 24 points and Niklas Kronwall at eight goals and 20 points.

After great rookie year, Jimmy Howard must be excellent

DETROIT -- In five days the Red Wings begin their 2010-11 season, and Jimmy Howard begins having to prove himself. Again. A rookie year that ended with him finishing second for the Calder Trophy was a rousing way to start an NHL career, but lots of goaltenders are good, even really good, for one season.

At 40, Modano to play in Motown

DETROIT -- Mike Modano will join the Red Wings, the Detroit Free Press has learned.

The Wings have been in hot pursuit of Modano, flying him in from Dallas a month ago and wooing him over lunch and a Tigers game. He also has suitors in San Jose and Minnesota, but has made up his mind.

Newer Wings feel they've found a place where they fit in and would like to return

DETROIT -- Like so many players before them, Patrick Eaves and Drew Miller joined the Red Wings, thrived and now are hoping to make it a long-term relationship.

Red Wings' Lidstrom still at the top of his game as he hits 40

One round into the NHL playoffs, Nicklas Lidstrom is second among defensemen with six points. The only ones ahead of him are a pair of 20-somethings.

Lidstrom has little flash and less flair to his game, but to those who appreciate hockey -- and most certainly to his teammates -- all the guy does is work miracles nearly every game. Thursday night, a day after he turned 40, he'll play his 243rd playoff game against the Sharks in Game 1 of the second round at HP Pavilion.
