Our S.S. funds stolen by Congress for other programs

Editor,

The March 25 “Thumbs up, thumbs down” editorial states: “Thumbs down to our ailing national budget and the stress due to its constant growth of entitlements. America is turning into a “retirement home society” as more and more of our expenditures and debt go to programs such as Medicare and Social Security.”

Pols have made a complicated mess of everything

Editor,

Once again we have a prime example of the incompetence of our congressional representatives. They are in a "dither" to steer the nation away from the "fiscal cliff."

Where did this "fiscal cliff" come from? I have no recollection of ever hearing that term before, but they seem to want to justify their jobs and their abilities and prove to the nation that they are needed and busy. If there is a "fiscal cliff" they must have created it.

Meals on Wheels always a worthwhile charity

Editor,

At this time of year, there are a host of charities that ask for and need financial help. God bless those who respond to the requests.

A program that always could use assistance, but is very seldom heard about, is the Meals on Wheels program. The aged, or invalids are sometimes forgotten but for the beneficiaries of this program, it is is a God-send.

Some branch of our government, state or county, is in charge of this program.

We'll be electing some who increased our debt

Editor,

Many, many years ago, before this nation had the communication system we now have and before everyone could get to a voting place, the electoral system was installed as a way to elect our nation’s highest leaders.

Under this electoral system, we have had a couple of presidents elected who did not receive the greatest number of popular votes. Under this system, the voting public is subjected to a choice of candidates that politicians have selected for us.

Softball champions didn't get deserved recognition

Editor,

I enjoyed the 24th of July Pioneer Days Parade, especially the temperature, but the parade was not complete. Weber High School won the 5-A Softball State Championship and Roy High School won the 4-A Softball State Championship. Both were remarkable achievements and both teams should have been invited to ride on a victory float in the big parade. These kids deserved that honor. Weber County slipped-up on that deal, and I slipped-up by not suggesting it at an earlier date. Sorry.

Our so-called, number one, news station on TV, on the day of the finals, spent 10 minutes telling and showing clips of games played by Salt Lake teams and at the very end of the sports cast, they allotted 10 seconds to announce that Weber won the 5A and Roy won the 4A.

We need a citizen committee to police government

Editor,

Once again we will elect our officials and lawmakers. Before we do that, let's look at one item that happened way back when.

A wise and caring (but not perfect) president established a plan called Social Security. It was a plan to secure and distribute funds that the working people of the U.S. had paid into to secure a retirement.

Plastic grocery bags sprout from trees

Editor,

I'm 73 years old and I thought I had seen most everything, but recent windstorms taught me a whole new lesson.

I had always thought that the plastic shopping bags were manufactured in a factory, but now I know that they sprout from trees on windy days.

We need lawmakers not beholden to donors or party

Editor,

I am not a Democrat. I am not a Republican. I am an American citizen; one who is disappointed with the elected officials and their policies that govern our nation.

Their misuse of our Social Security funds has put that program in jeopardy. Their misuse of our tax dollars has created a national debt that is far beyond acceptable.

No-sense politicians cost us money

I have a couple of questions. Why did $13 million have to be given to a contract that had the losing bid on a government construction job? Also, who paid the $13 million? Why do we taxpayers keep voting for these lack-of-common-sense politicians?

Use of "God" in TV ad in poor taste

There is an advertisement on TV that has usage of the word "God" as part of its pitch to sell tires. I do hope this does not become a common practice just like some people's language has become when they misuse the word "God" to emphasize something. There are some words and some names that deserve to be sacred. "God" is definitely at the top of the list.

Hayward has basketball talent naysayers ignore

When the announcement was made that Gordon Hayward was the selection that the Utah Jazz made in the recent draft, a chorus of "boos" came forth from some "experts" that follow the Jazz. Shame on those people!

This boy earned the right to be selected in the top ten. He has accomplished a level of play and basketball talent that the "booers" seem to not understand. Have any of them developed a basketball skill comparable to his talent?
