Marathon heart-attack deaths rise

Runners suffered heart attacks in the Boston Marathon in April, the Myrtle Beach, S.C., Marathon in February, the New York and Philadelphia marathons last November and the Chicago Marathon last October. These incidents sparked renewed interest in possible links between distance running and heart failure.

Study: High-school athletes return from concussions too soon

Of 14,635 high-school sports injuries reported during the 2008-10 school years, 1,936 (13.2 percent) were concussions, according to an epidemiological study published in January in the American Journal of Sports Medicine. This was nearly twice the rate reported in earlier studies of high-school athletes.

Walking your dog has health benefits -- for you

People who own and walk dogs are 34 percent more likely to meet federal benchmarks for physical activity, according to a study led by Michigan State University that was published recently in the Journal of Physical Activity and Health.

The study indicated that people who walked their dogs walked about an hour longer per week than people who owned dogs but didn't walk them.

Resistance bands gain strong following, fitness experts say

Resistance bands, also known as Thera-Bands, after a leading manufacturer, have long been used in rehabilitation.
