Air Force coach sees big season for Mountain West

LAS VEGAS -- In 2009, the Mountain West Conference went 25-16 against nonconference opponents, sent five teams to bowls and had three teams ranked among the top 18 squads in the nation at the end of the season.

Mountain West standing pat for now; no offer to Boise St.

The Mountain West Conference has not added blue turf to its landscape.

At least not yet.

Air Force trying to kick the habit

Erik Soderberg never has attempted a field goal or extra point in a college game.
But the Air Force sophomore is not unfamiliar with kicking on a big stage.
Soderberg, the front-runner to replace graduated standout Ryan Harrison as the Falcons' placekicker, played for Eden Prairie High in Minnesota and helped lead the Eagles to back-to-back state titles in 2006 and 2007. The state semifinal and championship games those years were held at the Metrodome. And in the 2007 semifinal, Soderberg made three field goals in the first half, including a pair from 45 yards.

Air Force linebacker Lamendola plays through the pain

Inside linebackers typically are regarded as some of the toughest players in a violent sport -- warriors who play through pain and deliver crushing hits in blood-stained jerseys.
Air Force junior Ken Lamendola only enhanced that reputation last season.
Lamendola revealed this week that he played almost the entire 2008 campaign -- from Week 2 on -- with a separated shoulder and a hernia. And in a season that served as an ode to throw-back tough guys like Dick Butkus, Sam Huff and Jack Lambert, he started every game and made a team-high 118 tackles.
"Kenny's biggest strength is his grit," Air Force coach Troy Calhoun said. "He padded up and he went."
Not that it wasn't painful.
