Stars made right call in firing Crawford

DALLAS -- It's OK to give Joe Nieuwendyk a pass on the Marc Crawford hiring. Any general manager can make a mistake.

Even one that's illuminated because former coach Dave Tippett, the man Nieuwendyk fired, has guided financially troubled Phoenix to the playoffs each of the last two seasons.

Around here, we've seen Donnie Nelson make mistakes. Jon Daniels, too. Lord knows Jerry has occasionally screwed up.

What separates good general managers from bad ones is how they deal with mistakes.

While Cowboys quarterback Romo shies away, Garrett holds his team accountable

DALLAS -- The Cowboys we saw last year didn't have much leadership. If they had, they never would have quit for a 10-quarter stretch in the middle of the season

Obviously, guys like Jason Witten, Bradie James and DeMarcus Ware are leaders. So is Keith Brooking, though pregame William Wallace speeches, as we've seen, only carry a team so far.

I'm talking about Troy Aikman leadership. And Michael Irvin leadership. I'm talking about the kind of leaders who can transform a good team into a championship contender.

Rooney Rule isn't perfect, but it has its moments

DALLAS -- When there's a minority coach as bad as Rich Kotite or David Shula, or even Eric Mangini, we can talk about getting rid of the Rooney Rule.

Until then, deal with it.

There's nothing wrong with the Rooney Rule, established in 2002 to ensure NFL clubs with vacant head coaching positions interview minority candidates before hiring a coach.

Garrett must put foot down, get what he needs from Jones

ARLINGTON, Texas -- During his 21-year reign as Dallas Cowboys owner, Jerry Jones has changed head coaches about every three years. If Jason Garrett wants to survive longer than that, he must run the team his way.

Garrett must have the authority to hire and fire coaches. And, to some degree, players.

He must have the authority to dispense fines and punishment, because it's the only way for the players to fully understand that Garrett -- not Jerry -- determines their fate.

Dez Bryant a risk vs. reward issue for many teams in NFL draft

LUFKIN, Texas -- Dez Bryant is the best receiver in Thursday's NFL draft, but it will surprise no one whether he is picked in the top 10 or much later in the first round.

U.S. planning, investment in winter sports is paying off as medals pile up

VANCOUVER, British Columbia -- Many Olympians spend their lives preparing for an event that lasts a minute or two but can define them for a lifetime.
