Justice system has many caught in revolving door

Editor,

We are all familiar with the phrase, "An ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure." Could this be applied to our present justice system? Do we need to improve and update our thinking as to what is happening to our society today?

I have been working with individuals to help them get their lives back in order and have positive self-esteem. One individual I have been working with finally found employment and was doing very well in his job. His employer liked the work he was doing. He previously had some problems, and reported to court. He was sentenced to 120 days in jail.

Mitt would lead country with honesty, fairness

Editor,

I have read articles and heard comments on the news that are negative to Mitt Romney's running for president some believed we should not nominate him as the Republican choice or endorse him because he is LDS, belonging to the Mormon Church.

I think it is about time that other churches and people become educated and get the message that there is no "Mormon" Church. It is the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Mr. Romney is a Latter-day Saint. Some church groups say that the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints is a cult and is not Christian. If not Christian, why is Jesus Christ's name in the church? Rarely does one find his name in any Protestant or Catholic church, so why is this?

LDS stake's donation event helped many in need

Editor,

In this day when the economy is bad and many people are out of work and in need, I and many others, would like to extend a thanks to those who were involved in keeping the true spirit of Jesus Christ alive and fulfilling his words, "inasmuch as ye have done it unto one of the least of these my brethren, ye have done it unto me" (Matt. 25:40). A heartfelt thank to all!

Sincere appreciation goes to those who spent time in organizing the event and volunteers, the purpose of which was to help members and non-members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. This event was open to anyone, no matter what religion, race or language and took place Jan. 21, 23, and 24. It was sponsored by the Weber Heights Stake.

We're all paying more for less

We are living at time when the economy is hurting many families that are out of work and trying to survive. In many cases, we as consumers are getting ripped-off, perhaps some are unaware of the tactics of the suppliers. Potato chips used to be 16 ounces, then 14 ounces, then 12 ounces, then 10 ounces, with a price increases for less. Gasoline is $3.45 and up. A gallon price increase much more than needed, but it comes down only a few cents. It would be advantageous to the consumers to stop buying gas for a few days (which would never happen). Products that were eight ounces are now four ounces, but at a higher price. Cereals are now fewer ounces for a higher price. The biggest rip-off at this time of year is canned popcorn decorated with Christmas or winter scenes. Unless we are buying the can for the picture, we are paying over five dollars for one pound of popcorn in a smaller can.

Help available for addictions

As each of us passes through life, at one time or another, we will be confronted with a crisis. Are we going to deal with it by drinking, smoking, eating, cheating, or other? Are we letting bad habits predict our lifestyles of addiction, which will be a part of our everyday living? What is addiction and to what can one become addicted? I would give the definition as a compulsive physiological need for a habit or feeling to be satisfied, formed in the same part of the brain.

We all have free agency to do what is right

As clocks tick away seconds, minutes and hours, valuable time has gone by, never to be retrived again. If we think about ife, its meaning, its fulfillment, are we as individuals doing the best we can? We cannot escape what we do at this second, this moment, or hour as it will have an affect on consequence, either in our own lives or the lives of others. Even in religion, some of us put on a facade to make ourselves appear that we are the best, but really underneath, we know the truth about ourselves and hope no one finds out. The savior said, "Know the truth and the truth shall make you free."
